Looking for a sub for my living room to connect to the HT system. Room is about 15x20 and I am considering the HSU STF-1 or STF-2. The HSU subs seems to be highly regarded in the forums. Are they on par with Velodyne and Definitive?

I own a VTF-2 MK3. I prefer the look of the Velodyne but my HSU sub outperforms the Velodyne ones I listened. I've never heard one from Definitive.

From the standpoint of what you get for X amount of money you spend, absolutely. No question.
I don't think you will find anyone that disputes the overall quality of the HSU products. They are all aroung excellent subs. They may not have top grade fit and finish but are still very good. After all, you get what you pay for. If you want the best of the cosmetics there are mutl-thousand $ subs out there for that.
If you want great bang for the buck, HSU is as good as it gets.

I picked up a used front firing VTF3 for the same price one would pay for a new STF1. I believe this is the original design. Don't know how much and how long it has been used and abused but it still shakes the room pretty good.
I have a maple VTF2.3 and the quality of the fit and finish is very high. It is vinyl but it looks very good. The most important thing to me though is it sounds GREAT.
HSU makes great subs for the money. (I just bought a VTF-MK3 w/turbo).
Fit and finish is very nice.
If you're gonna buy HSU then at least get the STF-2. An STF-1 will not have enough
output for the size of your room. STF-2 is rated for room that have 3000cu/ft.
Assuming you have 8' ceilings then you have 2400cu/ft. So you will be right
on the border. If you have any openings to other rooms then you will need more
output also. STF-3 ($160 more) rated up to 3600sq/ft, would probably be the
sub I'd get.......my 2 cents, vardo
Are HSU on par with Definitive.Only looking, reading the reviews and tests they are better and most iportantly better values.
As for Velodyne, only the upscale HGS/DD series best HSU in some respects and in others HSU has the upper hand. This is very impressive as HSU subs are priced in the segment below $1000,where you find Velo subs that would bite the dust.
Built quality is good,I only heard complaints from some store personel that did not sell HSU and they were ranting about nothing,as I told them the HSU they had in store for a comparo demolished a known sub that costed almost double!
WIth HSU you get a superb sub for the money.
I may rant and rave right and left but HSU deserves big props for offering near DIY price/performance for the masses.
