Okay,

I am getting ready to install my new projector and have a question about where my outlet has to be to plug the projector in.
Here is the scenario:
I have a slanted ceiling made of drywall that I want to install my electrical outlet in for my projectors power.
I am also planning on installing a drop ceiling underneath my drywall that will be black in color.
Now I know it is against code to have a 120v line just running against a drop ceiling. What I don't know is if it will be okay to have the projector hanging beneath the drop ceiling, have the projectors cord run up through the drop ceiling and plug into and electrical outlet in my drywall ceiling. Hope this can be visualized. If it is not against code, how long or short does the cord from the projector have to be to be legal? Can anyone help with this question. BY the way I am in Tampa Florida.
Thanks,
Mark

I can't answer for code compliance, but I've seen this type of setup done before. I'd recommend calling your local inspector and asking him/her.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if this info is wrong, but electrical cords can't be hidden in walls/ceilings/etc. I believe that this is true even if you are putting the cord into a drop ceiling. The rule of thumb as I understand it is that any cord coming off of a piece of equipment must be visible for its entire run.

I, too, have seen setups that put the cord inside of a drop ceiling, but I don't believe this meets the code requirement.

Almost certain that it is against code to run a flexible cable through a drop ceiling. You will see it done often in peoples screen shots of theaters with drop ceilings. You can install an outlet in a drop ceiling in a way that meets code, why not just do that?

Thanks for the reply guys. I had a feeling it might be a no no.
UsualSuspects...You said this which peaks my interest "You can install an outlet in a drop ceiling in a way that meets code, why not just do that?"

I can do that but then I will have a short run of my 120v cable running between the drywall ceiling and the drop ceiling, won't I. I figured that would be more of a code violation than having the projectors cord between the ceilings. Unless I am missing something. Is there another way to do it?
Thanks,
Mark

A short piece of couduit will solve the problem in most areas.

nx2k91 has it - you can't run bare romex above a drop ceiling, so you put it in conduit.
