View Full Version : Golf/Versus HD---as good as CBS?
I currently am have D*, and hate the fact I don't have the golf channel in HD. I would be less irritated if I knew if the HD programming on TGC was on par with NBC, which I find to be less than ideal, since they don't have any wireless on course HD cameras, so constant SD to HD to SD shots, unlike CBS.
So, what's the opinion of versus/TGC HD for those fortunate to see?

The TGC uses the equipment of the network weekend broadcaster. So on NBC weekends it is a hybrid production like NBC and on CBS weekends it is all HD.

Exactly.
I too have D*...wish they would carry this channel.
ridgefamus 03-23-07, 07:47 PM Seems the Safeway International on VS/Golf right now is in HD (via Comcast, Portland). Whose facilities are they using?

The mobile unit is from NEP Supershooters which in this case is NBC's mobile unit vendor.
ridgefamus 03-23-07, 07:57 PM I was surprised to see it being in HD. Neither the iGuide nor HD SportsGuide.com shows this being in HD. I am seeing more HD from this production than I did from the earlier WCG coverage from Doral.

Don't tell me this. Now I have even move reason to be pissed that I don't get Versus/Golf HD via Cablevision.
beaudot 03-23-07, 11:00 PM This channel was a very pleasant surprise to me when it came on line. I find myself watching way more early rounds of golf this year than ever before. I don't know that any other sport benefits as much from hd as golf. Very nice that they repeat it in the evening too.
Also cool that they now show all nhl games in hd too. I am guessing there'll be a lot of playoff games in hd this year.
This channel quickly became one of my top 3 or so must have channels.
DrCrawn 03-24-07, 01:55 AM At least here in Seattle via Comcast, Versus looks excellent, minimal blocking, unlike UHD and TNTHD which often look simply terrible.
jdspencer 03-24-07, 02:22 PM No Golf or Versus in HD for me (DirecTV). But, I would like to mention that NBC HD is the worst of all major networks. Especially, with their golf presentation. Constant breakups.
jwbausch 03-25-07, 09:06 PM Why no LPGA on VSGLF in HD tonight? I swear the last two evenings it was in HD, although nobody reported in advance that it would be. Any chance that TGC paid for the equipment to do HD broadcasts and sent all this stuff on the road after the Saturday round in order to get it set up for the Tavisstock Cup on Monday in Florida?
Cheers,

Very highly doubtful, as in no chance that they swapped out equipment mid event.

So what is the reason?! Was there some kind of weather event that sent the players out early and necessitated a tape delay broadcast and TGC/VSGLF can't handle doing HD non-live?

Not a clue what the problem is. I have been busy watching other stuff today. VS/GLF does have the ability to show delayed material in HD as witnessed by them replaying PGA events at night.
vurbano 03-26-07, 07:27 AM Even the HD portions yesterday did not look sharp to me.

I'm still waiting for this channel so I can't say firsthand. Was it on the HD channel but not in HD or was something else on? If something else was on then it's because the final round was shown with a 7:30 start and on Sat-Thu Versus takes over the channel at 7:00.
Those of you who have it please let me know if the Tavistock Cup is in HD today. If they start showing events that they produce (LPGA, Sr PGA, etc) in HD then I'll have to start pestering Cablevision every day to add it.
John Mason 03-26-07, 08:50 AM Don't get TGC in HD (yet), but NBC's delivery of true HD is equivalent to CBS in PQ here (via a WNBC-DT fiber link to my Time Warner Cable head end). And since there are complaints about breakups on local NBC OTA (and even another cable company), this suggests TWC's fiber link is independent of the reduced bit rate from NBC's OTA multicasting.
Someone mentioned LPGA in HD above. Didn't realize TGC/Versus-HD was carrying LPGA matches in HD. The SD golf channel has been delivering the 6:30 pm ET LPGA matches tape delayed for a while now. This year most SD matches are greatly improved PQ-wise, although here they're still 4:3. The weekday SD delivery of matches on TGC, when HD cameras are used, is vastly improved here after the 1080i=>480i downconversion by the network. -- John

Did it show up at all on Golf/VSHD? I switched over last night and it wasn't on at all. I had to go to the actual Golf Channel to watch in SD. Golf/VSHD had the Ididirod.

If TGC/Versus-HD switches to Versus in the evenings, can they (or have they) ever carry LPGA or other matches that start at 6:30+ pm ET? Hoping my TWC will begin the HD service one of these days. -- John

I believe the switch from TGC to Versus is supposed to take place at 7:00 ET. On Saturday, the women's golf started at 6:30 and they stayed with it until the end. On Sunday, it didn't start until 7:30 ET and by then Versus programming was already on.

Thanks for the info. Were the LPGA matches in true 1080i or just upconverted? Anyone? -- John
Are they showing the Tavistock Cup in HD?
Are they showing the Tavistock Cup in HD?
The few times i have seen this on it has not been in HD, so i would say no.
Your answer is a little confussing.
The Tavistock Cup was live yesterday from 12-5 and is on live now. Are you saying that you have seen it yesterday or today on Versus/Golf HD not in HD?

I just turned to VS/GLF to check for this thread and it is not in HD.

Thanks for the confirmation. I guess they are not ready to do stuff in HD unless they get the production from NBC or CBS. I can deal with missing Thursday & Friday coverage in HD but would really be upset if all of their other tournaments were HD. Hopefully, other cable companies will be able to get this channel soon.
jwbausch 03-27-07, 07:46 PM If my memory serves me correctly, I saw some of the Safeway LGPA tourney on VSGLF both Friday and Saturday night. And it was definitely HD. Not an upvert. I have a professionally calibrated Sony KD-XBR960 and the picture was glorious. ;-)
chuckywang 10-12-07, 11:08 PM It is not in HD.
I live in the Chicago area too with Comcast. Most of the Golf stuff is in widescreen, but not in HD.

I do not believe that Golf Channel or Versus has done any SD Widescreen production.
I really don't know what your quote the other poster for. His post was in response to the Tavistock Cup back in March.

Well, I was switching between the regular SD Golf channel and the supposedly HD Golf Channel. Both have the same PQ (perhaps the HD is just a little bit clearer) with the SD channel in 4:3, and the HD channel in 16:9. And it's not stretch-o-vision as some channels are, but true 16:9 as the SD channel cut off the sides.
The PQ is fine for Versus HD.
Marcus Carr 10-13-07, 06:26 AM They Frys.com Open was in SD widescreen yesterday. That's the first time I've seen them do that. The LPGA Samsung World Championship Was in 4:3.

But they show in their little logo that it is HD, and it is definitely NOT HD.
I find their picture as bad as the nbc sd cameras, which is not good.
When NBC is the host broadcaster for Golf Channel HD, they use a large number of handheld SD cameras in their HD broadcasts.
Marcus Carr 10-13-07, 02:04 PM Now NBC is showing the LPGA Samsung World Championship in SD widescreen.
John Mason 10-13-07, 02:16 PM Switched off the LPGA match on WNBC-DT because the PQ was so poor. Just straight WS SD with no HD cameras apparently, and it's not listed as HDTV in the guide. The edge enhancement screws up the PQ so much that even viewing NBC's upconverted WS 1080i from my 8300HD cable STB as S-video doesn't help. Spoiled by so much HD golf this year I guess. -- John
Most of the cameras that Golf Channel has been using for the "Fall Series" have been SD Widescreen. I've watched some of it every week and I've seen only a couple of cameras each week that looked HD. It's been rather dissapointing since Golf Channel had exclusive coverage of the LPGA championship and every shot was HD, but they aren't doing the same for their exclusive PGA tour coverage.
