View Full Version : Toshiba TW65H80 geometry problem.

I have an old TW65h80 I inherited and I've been pretty happy with. I've succesfully used the service menu a few times to correct overscan issues etc, but now I've got a geometry problem that none of the settings seem to adjust.

Basically the edges of the top and bottom of the screen bow out slightly distorting the picture at the top and bottom. The center of the picture at the bottom i perhaps 2 inches lower than either side. I'm not sure if I'm describing this clearly but it's basically the same as what the PARA setting changes in the service menu except for the top and bottom instead of the sides.

I've tried adjusting every setting in the service menu with no luck at all on effecting it. I can effect the sides all day long and they are perfectly straight but none of the settings seem to make a difference on the top and bottom.

I've adjusted VLIN, PARA, CNR, and TRAP to every extreme and only see differences is the horizontal geometry.

Can anyone point in the right direction on what I might be able to adjust to alleviate this problem? I've seen a few places on the net where people talk about taking the TV apart and making mechanical adjustments, is that what is needed here?

Here is a picture as you can see the task bar on the left and right are perfectly aligned but the center drops below the screen. It's not just a function of the HTPC it also does this when displaying Xbox 360.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Edit:

Also I don't know if it makes a difference but I am using a component input at 1080i resolution.

Judging by the task bar drop in the middle, it doesn't look like it's 2" s off. Have you tried doing a service menu convergence before? If you are familiar with doing it, you can shut down the red and blue guns and pull the green grid up in the center. Then align the red and blue guns back up to it. I have a newer Tosh than yours(46H83), but i'm pretty sure i could move my grid that far in service menu convergence.

*update* It appears the problem only happens in 1080i, if i scale it back to 480p everything is straight as an arrow. Unfortunately content doesn't fill my screen in 480p, so it looks rather bad.

I don't beleive (and i could be totally wrong here) that my particualr model has the capability for service menu convergence. From what i've read the h80 models did not have a design mode. I've of course done the regular convergence that does not allow moving the green, but what i've read suggests moving the green involves mechanical adjustments. Since the problem is on both the top and bottom of the screen do you think it's still a convergence problem?

The droop is very pronounced when viewing certain content, for example if you pause something in media center the pause bar is very noticeably bowed downward, etc.

Thanks a lot Pittdog1 I was able to find a service level convergence mode that allows me to move the green gun. After doing some initial moving of all 3 guns in the corners I was able to make headway fixing the distortion. I can tell I'm going to be at this for hours making sure I get perfect rectangles on all 3 colors in every quadrant =p.

Just be careful how long you leave that grid up per session. It is quite bright and could possibly cause burn-in on the CRT's. Glad i could help. There's alot of good info on the H83/H84 owners thread here. I know your set is a bit older, but still a good read. I posted some pics over there of cleaning my CRT's and screen removal as well.

Here's a link to it. Post 1779 starts the pics i mentioned. It's a long thread, but there is alot of info in there that still may apply to your set. Good luck!!
