I’m sure there’s probably a HUGE thread about this, but I couldn’t find it.

I need a DVD player with the following specifications:

• Under $200
• Upconversion
• Region-Free
• PAL/NTSC
• HDMI

I've had nothing but trouble with the Oppo players I've had, so any suggestions besides that would be greatly appreciated. ;)

Thanks!

Easy to make region free (see www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks) and has PAL-to-NTSC conversion.

Do you know if that Yamaha can display PAL only? My projector can handle PAL and I'd rather have the direct source than the conversion.

Thanks again! :)

Yes, it can output PAL from a PAL source. You can download the manual from the Yamaha web site and it explains the output modes. It is also known as the DV-S659 model.

Go with an OPPO DVD Player...............They make some of the very best upconversion players out there.

Very easy to make Region Free also.

Did you read the OP's post #1? He doesn't want Oppo.

There are many good players even under $100 that would meet your request, the ones that can be made region free by performing a simple and harmless region free hack.
One example - the Philips DVP5960, that can be had for under $60 (http://www.employeestore.philips.com/b2c_redesign/b2c/productdetail.do?productguid=4192934B236F010500000000828BD47 342FCF3B09B90025400000000828BD443&productarea=4192934B236F010500000000828BD473&scenario=catalog&shop=PHILIPSCE) at some places.
Here is the region free hack:

Power Up the unit with NO Disc in the tray.
Open the tray
Press the SETUP Button on the remote control
Navigate to the PREFERENCES page using the Right Arrow Key
Press the DOWN ARROW one time to select
Press the 1 button on your remote control
Press the 3 button on your remote control
Press the 8 button on your remote control
Press the 9 button on your remote control
Press the 3 button on your remote control
Press the 1 button on your remote control
The current Region Code Setting will display
Use the UP/DOWN Arrow Keys to select the region required or '0' for All Regions
Press the PLAY Button on the remote control

I couldn't find this in the Yamaha's manual, but does anyone know if the DV-S5950BL can upconvert via component?

Thanks.

Doubtful. Very few "mainstream" players do without "hacks".

I forgot to mention that I wanted upcon via component. Anyone have any other suggestions?
