not exactly sure where to post this so i guess i'll post it here

I have a sammy HLR-5087.. think that was the model got it over a year ago, its the kirk model with the cool build in stand. Anyway, other than some slight video lag which pisses me off in gaming its pretty sweet, with 720p games with DNIE off its not noticable with dnie on its slightly noticable, and in 480p games it noticable with it on or off

anyway. im hooking up some of my older computers up to my room and figured putting one onto this tv would be pretty bitching, the thing is i dont really have an input for it. Right now im just using an Svideo cable which looks frankly like total crap. its all fuzzy and text is very hard to read, and i ant go any higher than 1024X768 res. for some reason i cant set it to widescreen under this either

i really wish this tv just had a DVI input that would make everyting eay but i does not. My only other option it seems is to use the HDMI input on the tv, the thing is i would need some kinda DVI to HDMI cable, and when i checked around at some stroes i was floord at the cost. Just an 8 foot cable (about the length i would need) costs like 180 bucks!! wtf?!?! isn't HDMI just DVI with audio pretty much? jesus christ. Are these prices right? i was expecting like 40 or 50 bucks or something tops

this has me wondering about HDMI cables alone, i notcied those were pricy as well. Does brand really matter with stuff like that, its a digital source so i would think there would be no issue with signal quality like there is with analog stuff like component cables. When i eventually get a ps3 (when they finally have some good games, yeesh) i'll be getting an HDMI cable for it probably and think paying 100 bucks for one is kinda a joke.

but anyway the main questions the HDMI to DVI cables.. are those prices right? is there any other way i could hook this up for cheaper? im not paying over 100 bucks for that i'll just use my old dying CRT monitor at that price

edit:

wtf i found this
http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=334

that looks like what i need and at like less than 10% th eprice of the other ones i was looking at.. am i missing something, isn't that what i want? will that work? why the hells it so low? and is that palce any good =P

good find and yes, it should work. it is not so low just power of search working for you:):)
many cable companies prices are simply sky high margin sales trying to make you think it is worth it.

also try a forum sponsor monoprice.com, they have a wide variety of cables all well built at excellent prices, they ship fast and well regarded on here by many forum users.

wow i just cant wrap my head around that lvl of markup though, thats insane. how the hell do you justify 15 dollars vs 180 dollars for the same thing, thats crazy

i guess i'll give it a try. i looked at that monoprice link and they got some too for around the same price

question though, whats an AWG rating on these mean? it seems to range from 22-30

American Wire Guage, usually reffers the thickness, where smaller numbers are larger guage/thickness. and as to what the wire can transmit/pass/carry in terms of electrical loads. kinda relate it to shotgun guages, a 20 gauge shotgun is alot smaller than a 12 guage.......

does that actually effect video quality or anything though? i.e. would a 24 AWG perform better than a 28 AWG

good plaec for dvi to hdmi for cheap in a pinch is walmart.

they sell philips brand cables for $27.

not nearly as cheap as online, but not $100 either.

every walmart i've been to has these.

I have a DVI to HDMI 24 AWG 3 foot cable that I got from Monoprice for my HD STB to the HDMI port on my Samsung 5679w LED DLP. The cable was $12.79 and it works great. Monoprice was a pleasure to deal with and I would recommend them all day long for cables.

i guess i'll do monoprice since its a sponsor of this site. just not sure to go for the 28 or 24 guague, hmm

i checked walmarts online site and i just saw the adaptors from hdmi to dvi not the actual cable

i guess i'll do monoprice since its a sponsor of this site. just not sure to go for the 28 or 24 guague, hmmFor a normal connection 28 AWG is as good as heavier wire. The longer the cable the better it is to have a lower AWG number. I'm not sure what distance would require the 24 AWG, but 8' shouldn't.

Keep in mind that just any old computer isn't going to do a great job connected to your TV. For starters you need a graphics card that supports the native resolution of your TV. You also need drivers that do the same thing.

You can check out the "Home Theater Computers" forum here at AVS for more information.

hrm well i went for a 15 foot i gues that should be fine. anythign is better than the crappy s video i guess

im hoping it will work its a raedon 9800XT i belive, on an older computer of mine but not too old, im asuming it will suport 720p.. 720p is liek 1280X720 or something i think right? i'll give it a shot when it comes in and if it doesn't work maybe i can get some sugestions on the home theater forum you sugest, tnx. i dont see why it shouldnt' work though as long as i set the resolution right

well it came in and i hooked it up and it seemed to work, picture quality is very good, sems to be overscanning a bit and i cant find an option to adjust that though...

i coulda lived with that but the problem is i cant get the game to start, (WOW) i go to play it and it says that it couln't start 3d acceleration or something to make sure i have DX9.0c, and that drivers are up to date. I know it should work because i was playing fine with the monitor or s video before, any idea whats wrong?

also any way to adjust screen position or anything like that. I'll go double check on the computer forum you mentioned but wondering if anyone here has any solutions?

tnx

Yep, that's where I got mine. :) Also got my HDMI-HDMI cable from them, too. I think both were actually under the $10 mark for me (I went with the smaller gauge.)

well its workign kinda, reinstalling the drivers seemed to work but when i go to launch the game it sets it to 800 rez and i cant change it in game, when i pick something else nothing happens. if i quit and go to desktop my desktop is then resized to 800 as well!.. wth? any ideas on whats up? been screwing with it for over an hour but i cant figure out why its doing that.
