To Whom it may concern,
I love the information and the expert advice found on the AVS Forum. Yet, the search engine is not good in the least. I've even tried closed quotes around key words and found everything but the specific query. Surely this causes a lot of redundant posts, which must load down the website significantly.
Sincerely,
Winkelmann

Yes, although the site is super great, the search could surely be more sophisticated. It would save a lot of unnecessary postings, I am sure.

It's often hopeless to search - the biggest weakness of this forum IMO and it's poor spellcheck system. :)

I agree the search engine and spell checker leave a lot to be desired: a better alternative is to use Google: set Google to spell check your posts: it works great: it will underline in red a misspelled word and by right clicking on it will offer corrections
Do a search on Google and you will see it returns AVS threads in most cases :)

I've used Google before with better results. Though a few times I get an expired page notice.

mark,
I'm curious - some forums like Silent PC Review have Google Search as an option. Any idea how much that service would cost for avsforum?
That would be much more useful for archive1 and archive2, by the way.

... poor spellcheck system. :)
Use the Firefox 2.0 browser and you won't need another spellchecker! :D (I gather that it automatically uses the Google engine?)

that would be something the administrators would have to comment on
seems like a good idea though

Google AVS site search is in the search drop down menu at the top of the page.
It's located between quick links and photo gallery.:)

This is nothing new. The VB software using MySQL and as such it is the week point of the software. It is not just this site, but any site that uses this forum software. Sorry, it is what it is.
Google offers a search appliance that can index the site in real time. The issue is that a site that is this larger would cost like $90,000+ for the Google box for they charge by the number of pages. They consider each post a page. Not each thread.
When we get to where we can move to the new version of Vb, their is another search routine that looks hopeful.
As mentioned, we do have Google search built in, but it as only as good as what they have indexed.
Thanks
