I have 3 DVD players in my home theater:

OPPO OPDV971H (1080i only)
Toshiba HD-DVD model HD XA1
Samsung Blu-ray BD-P1000

Projector: Full 1080p EPSON EMP-TW1000 Projector.

I want to play standard DVD up-scaled to HD image of 1080i or 1080p, which DVD player from above mentioned 3 players should I pick to get the best result of HD picture quality via HDMI connection?

Thanks

Why not just get one of the High Def players and watch true HD instead of upscaled? If I had the choice of those three, though, I'd probably take the XA1, which isn't to say it's better than the Oppo at upconverting, but it is pretty good, and it will also play HD DVD's. Actually, if I were in your shoes, I would try to get my hands on the XA2. It has the new SO Reon chip, which is also found in the Denon 2930-CI, and does a fantastic job at upscaling.

The Samsung got poor early reviews for SD-DVD upscaling. Whether it has been improved since I do not know. The Oppo and Toshiba are well-liked in this regard.

Maybe he wants to watch titles that won't be in HD for years, if ever?

Sorry to confuse you Bri, I have edited my original thread, it is not "If I have", the correct one is " I have". Meaning I have those 3 players now in my HT, which one I have to use to Upscale std DVD to my full 1080p Epson projector via HDMI?

Thanks

Did you guys actually read my entire post or just the first sentence?

iwanrs,

If you have all three players, you're in a perfect position to tell us which one you think is the best at upconverting. If I were in your position, I'd sell the XA1, and the Oppo and buy the XA2, because I doubt any of them will match it's upconverting ability, plus you retain the HD-DVD playability.

^^^^ What about audio and non region 1 (NTSC and PAL) DVDs? iwanrs, is you are happy with the hidef players you have I'd stay put for now until all the kinks are worked out of the hidef players and all the audio decoding is supported. And they'll be a little cheaper by then too.

I have no idea when the hidef players will be more or less bug free, do all the audio decoding and ouput 1080p24. Could be in a couple months. With regard to which player to use for upconverting, use the one that looks best to you.
