Hey guys. I was wondering if any of you have had experience with sound proof windows for your home. If so could you please recommend some brands, model, and impressions? Also could I hear some tips on how to soundproof a window?Such as the type of window with an unremovable insert.

Thanks

Drew

I have high-impact windows around my entire house. They kill off a lot more sound than a standard window would, and they are great for security since it is nearly impossible to break through the window.

Offtopic: There was an incident my old GC saw that in Miami Beach, the fire dept was trying to get in through one of those impact windows in a condo and they were hitting it with everything they had and couldn't break it, they finally quit and just broke through the door and unlocked the windows from the inside.

Edit: High-impact windows are very heavy so mass helps alot, too.

Great idea on the impact resistant windows. My room (per wifey directive) will still have windows when all is said and done.

Cheers,

Curt

Only two people on this forum have windows that rattle?

People have windows in their HT? ;)

Realistically, any modern window shouldn't rattle. Only antique windows with glass that's not held securely are likely to rattle. Without replacing the windows, you could consider redoing the seal to prevent the glass from rattling, should be pretty easy to do. If the whole thing is rattling in the frame, you could use some wood shins to tighten that if that's what's rattling.

Its not actually the window that rattling, its the insert inside the two panes of glass that is. there is no way for me to remove these insterts so the only way i see is to replace.

if you are going to replace, get a high-impact window to replace it with. It is very heavy because it is built with 2 panes of 1/8" high strength glass that sandwich a .050 layer of polycarbonate.

I do not know of any other soundproof type windows, but I would guess that all you need is really thick glass.

I’ve decided to go with these guys (http://www.soundproofwindows.com/) . I think they would help the resale value of the home as well. Who wouldn’t mind soundproof windows in their bedrooms and better insulation? By the way attached are pictures of my current theater.

Please post some results when you get them put in! :) I'm really interested to see how that product works. That's a major concern for me right now since the airport just decided to route planes over my house.

I was looking at those exact ones, and these.
