I just purchased a 37" LCD by Vizio the other day, and when I hook up my DVD player to it by component cable, the aspect ratio is all wrong. I have my TV set to wide format, which is the norm for this TV, but movies are thinner than what they should be. However when I watch the same DVD in my PS3, same settings for the TV, it plays them correctly, meaning 2.35:1 movies actually look like 2.35:1 ratio movies. I long have lost the manual for my DVD player, and Sony doesn't have one listed on their website (model NS50P ), and there isn't anything in the settings to change aspect ratio from 4:3( previous TV ) to 16:9. Is there a reason why the PS3 plays them correctly but not my DVD player?

What do the video settings on the dvd player have? You say there isn't a choice to select if you are using a widescreen tv?

Not from what I've seen, no. Just the button in front of my player to switch from interlace to progressive scan. It might be a simple thing and I'm just overlooking it, but I messed with it for about 3 minutes and couldn't figure it out, and I'm usually a whiz when it comes to electronics. I'll mess with it at home some more, currently at work.

There must a menu selection in the DVD setup for switching between 4:3 and 16:9 TV shapes. This has been part of the DVD standard since day 1.

Comments here mention "automatic aspect ratio" which sounds suspicious to me:
