I have come to own a nice used Pioneer Elite Pro510HD. The previous owner was not using an HD signal. The TV is working fine and accepting a 1080i signal. I was able to get an awesome convergence through the user menu.
The problem is the vertical size of the HD picture is too large for the screen and cutting the top and bottom of the picture off. I also noticed that the geometry is off (circles are vertically oblong). On 480i signals the size and geometry is correct.
What is the proper adjustment for vertical size of an HD signal, and equally important, if it is on a board inside how do I identify that board (no service manual in my possession). I previously owned a sony 1031q front projector so I have some comfort level with the 'pots'.
Also, is there any way to get this TV to accept a 720p signal? I sent it one briefly but it could not resolve it. I recall on my 1031 there was a trim pot that i could adjust to accept a higher scan rate.
Thanks for the help.

Contact MrBob here at AVS via a PM or ask this same ? in his thread titled "Don't dump your CRT". Very good read. There is also an owners thread here for 510/710 Pioneer sets as well. Bob is an ISF tech and is doing his best to preserve all CRT's and especially Pioneers.

If I recall correctly all you need to do is choose how you want to watch stuff. Full, zoom, wide, etc. I think there are several choices in how this will display and stretch your picture. Pick the one you like best and go with it... You might start by reading the manual... What a thought. If you don't have one, call Pioneer or go online to download it...

I have the user manual and have read it. And yes there are several viewing modes, however, they only apply to 480i signals. Once you are in 480p or 1080i it locks into "Full" mode and it is this mode that the geometry and size are incorrect, but thanks for your input.

This is all done in the service menu, which on a Pioneer has quite a learning curve. A service manual is a must if you want to DIY, and you MUST use component to go in with whatever HD signal you intend to use. RGB does not allow for geometry/convergence correction, and HDMI was not even invented yet, when this set was produced (first part of the long learning curve...)
I don't believe these sets can do 720p at all. Which is OK, because 1080i has twice the res anyway.
These 510s can look absolutely awesome, completely set up and dialed in. My owners get to sit 6' back from them when I am thru with them, allowing most viewers a half again bigger picture to watch, minimum, compared to what they had available to them, to watch before. 6' back from these babies delivers a huge net picture to watch!
I am available for phone consultation if you wish, or you could fly me in, either for just your unit or for a calibration tour you could set up.
Build one and I will come.
