Hello!

My theater is just about done and I am starting to work on the lobby this week. I am looking for some photos of candy / concession counters! Please post anything that you might have, I would love to get some ideas...

Thanks,

I went the same route as buggdog. I guy across the street from my office had a display counter for sale.. Paid $60. Didn't do the work buggdog has done yet.

You can see it in the pics of my theater...

Those are pretty awesome, I wish I had the room for one, lol! Does anyone use a soda machine that is relatively small as far as the space it takes up. The size of the machine doesn't matter so much but the boxes of syrup usually are pretty big and I have a small area.

If you go into the special events section...the photo galleries in there have alot of other shots of the lobby area (with people in the shots though). Also if you go into the final construction gallery there are more shots of the lobby area and ticket booth and such.

Those are the most reasonable snack prices I've seen in a theater since about 1985... :p

I like it better than a counter actually!
You don't have to worry about glass because you can go straight to the candy.
Very cute and it's just right!

DANG! Where do you guys find these $50 & $60 counters? I never fall in to that kind of stuff. I have friend that got a small Coke refrigerator with a glass front from a school that was going to throw it out ("Because it didn't work right" --- needed two light bulbs and a coolant charge!) AND a LARGE, commercial refrigerator with sliding glass doors that a pizza place was throwing out because the Coke guy was giving him a new one.

I guess I gotta' get out more.

One thing I like is how I have the shelves angled so everythign slides forward after you take whatever you want.

I've got step by step instructions on building one. I can't remember where I actually got it from, but it is originally from Home Theater Builder Magazine and in PDF format. Some let me know of a way to share and I will. I've held on to it, as I'm considering building one, but can't decide if I really have the room.

I just finished my counter. Here is a pic. It has LED lighting for each shelf to illuminate the future candy. :)

Total cost was around 75 dollars.

2 sheets of 1/2" MDF
8 2x4's
16 feet of trim for top/bottom/candy counter opening
8 feet of shelf trim
1 2'x2' white light diffuser panel for the back of the candy box.

put together with glue and air gun nails/brads.

Very nice. I notice it is much wider than the shelves. Is there storage space behind it?

jikkjack

Thanks! It is actually only 1.5" wider than the shelves. I did this in case I ever decide to add some small light bulbs in the back to illuminate the back area (where the light diffuser is) of the shelves in the future.

I considered putting in a candy counter like many on this thread, but my space is pretty limited. My theater room did have a bumpout in the foundation, so I made use of that space with a cabinet (a standard sized cabinet fit perfectly leaving a 1/8" gap!) with a granite top. The counter gives me room for candy, butter dispenser, etc. The cabinet provides me with some much needed storage (PS3/WII controllers, game accessories, extra cups, popcorn, candy, etc).

Here's the link:
http://www.concessionstands.com/s.nl;jsessionid=0a0101441f43b99ed5599437487098e79eaae54d651b .e3eSc3uNaNuTe34Pa38Ta38Pb3z0?it=A&id=21413&sc=2&category=505

The one I purchased has three containers with 2 liters of storage each. I love them. But after using these for a few weeks, I've discovered a few things:

They have a plastic piece that you can adjust to set how much product is released with each pull; I originally had it at the maximum, but I found that most folks just stick their hand underneath rather than fill a bag/cup, so I adjusted the amount to the minimum and it seems to be perfect.

2 liters is way too much. The one liter units would have been plenty.

The way the mechanism works, it sometimes "chops" a piece of candy that gets caught halfway between the storage aread and the dispenser. It's not a big deal with softer candies (M&Ms, Reeses Pieces, Jelly Bellys), but it may cause problems with some of the harder ones (Runts, etc).

There really is a limit to the kind of candies that you can put in the dispensers, but so far I'm happy with them.

Here's mine ...my 3 yr old is always stealing candy from it, i have to lock this bad boy up LOL!

I found it on Craigslist for $100

do a search on "Display Cabinet" or "Commercial Display Case" with the bad economy tons of businesses are going down so you should be able to find one fairly easily.

No kidding! I looked around for a while before I settled on those. Most of the others I've seen are even higher. These (http://www.displays2go.com/product.wide.asp?ID=6389) are $130 for each dispenser. And these(http://www.reliablepaper.com/Rosseto_Natural_Food_Dispenser_p/ROSSETOEZ-SERV-H-50.htm) are even more!

(Oh, and I do have a popcorn machine, too. ;) )

I have a popcorn popper already as well.
Hey, I'm not knocking them. If the market bears the price and they are jumping off the shelf at $250, then more power to em!! Rake in the profits… :D
I'll just stick with the $1 per box theater candy at the local pharmacy thank you very much. ;)
Besides, I think the boxed theater candy looks better for display and I could just see it now that probably 25% or more of the candy from those dispensers would end up getting spilled on the floor in the theater.

My version of a candy/concessions counter is deliberately "hidden away" in a converted storage closet underneath a stairwell located across from the "Sports Bar" area of my remodeled basement (a.k.a. "The lobby" -- where drinks are served; Retro free-standing bar, expandable dining/game table, custom cabinets & countertop with a sink, double dishwasher, beverage refrigerator, and wine cooler).

The "Sports Bar":

The Closet:

http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy11/arainesjr/IMG_2272.jpg

Open the closet door, and SURPRISE !!!!! . . . . The Raines' "PopKorn & Kandy Kloset." (updated version) :D :)

http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy11/arainesjr/IMG_2489.jpg

I built the "koncessions counter & kandy shelves" cheaply by modifying my old AV system rack (http://www.sanus.com/us/en/products/av-foundations/av-euro/efav-11), (no longer needed, since I had new custom AV cabinetry made).

Modifications were: 1/2" moulding strips (added to the front of the 3 candy shelfs (to keep candy boxes from slipping off), 3 double stands of LED rope lights (one above each shelf for illumination), cheap acyclic slanted display stands (used to display candy boxes at an angle for easier viewing and access), an extension cord power strip + step-on switch, and a small can of black enamel spray paint. Total modification cost of approx $60.

Close-up of LED Rope Lighting over the shelves (camera flash ON):

Close-up (camera flash OFF) -- showing actual effect of rope lighting in the closet:

http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy11/arainesjr/IMG_1030.jpg

The top shelf holds a Paragon 6-oz Popcorn Machine & butter warmer, electric air purifier, 2 types of popcorn/oil packs, and popcorn bowls:

http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy11/arainesjr/IMG_1038.jpg

Below, there are 3 well-stocked shelves of goodies . . . something for "sweet-tooths" (sp?) of all ages . . . chocolates, fruity candies, and cookies/crackers. Enough to make one's pancreas work overtime !!! ;)

http://i773.photobucket.com/albums/yy11/arainesjr/IMG_1047.jpg

"Islet Cells of Langerhans . . . FULL-SCALE ATTACK !!!!!. . . WE NEED MORE INSULIN !!!!!" :confused::eek::mad:

This is definitely one of our most favorite parts of our "home theater experience" !!! Total cost of entire PopKorn & Kandy Kloset --- PRICELESS.

*** My remodeled/HT build project (Raines Entertainment Emporium & Sports Bar) was featured last September on HGTV "NEW SPACES" ***

AWESOME PopKorn & Kandy Kloset!

Definitely a different and unique way to display your concessions. I like the "hidden away in a closet" --- the "surprise" factor adds to the cool effect.

The only thing missing in there are "Hot Tamales."
