View Full Version : Good FAQ source/key threads for Sub shopping??

I don't want to ask the same questions that have likely been asked a 1,000 times before ("best sub for me," "new vs used," "where do I place it," "one or two," "best design style for my room," etc., etc.).

I'm wondering if anyone could direct me to a really good F.A.Q. on subs 101, as well as some of the more informative threads?

Oh, heck, here's what I'm weighing. I'm rebuilding an entry-level high end HT only system (I have a 2-channel music system in the living room). My amplification and speakers are done (5 NHT VS-2s driven by 5 B&K 200w monoblocks), but everything else has yet to be purchased. I'll probably pick up a pre-owned pre/pro with multi-channel analog inputs being the prerequisite, which I'm also researching.

I'm budgeting about $1k for a pre-owned subwoofer (s).

The family room where the system is going is in the basement, with hardwood floors over cement and a wood ceiling. The dimensions are 21' wide by 13' deep with a 7' ceiling. Because of things like a door leading to the laundry room and the stairs descending into the family room, my listening position has to be on the long wall (less than ideal acoustically but...).

So:

************************************I.door.I**************** ******
*...........LS.....................TV.....................RS ...............................................*.S..*
*........................................................... .....................................................*.T..*
*........................................................... .....................................................*.A..*
*........................................................... .....................................................*.I..*
*........................................................... .....................................................*.R..*
*........................................................... .....................................................*.S..*

*........................................................... ......................................................*
*....................................me..................... ....................................................*
*.....LRS................................................... .........RRS.....................................*
************************************************************ ****

Hopefully, that's not gobbledy gook. The wall the TV and the system are against is drywall dividing the room from the laundry room (in fact, I plan to inlay the components into the wall when it's all done) with a LCD or plasma mounted on the wall. So the sweet spot is roughly 11' from the display. The left wall and the wall behind me are both main, solid house walls, partially submerged (this is the basement) with small windows higher up.

Should I plan for one or for two subs? I suppose the answer to that will help define what my $1k budget will buy.
