I was able to get into the service menu on my new Tosh DLP, still haven't got the whole service manual so I'm flying blind. I could really use some help in determining how Tosh's service system works & some explanation of what some of the adjustment abbreviations mean & do. There is the usual R,G,B, cuts & drives, & there is a HPOS & VPOS that was useful in getting my images to fit properly. Beyond that I didn't recognise much of anything. There is a CNTCB, CNTCR, & CNTCG that seems to have the same effect on setting grayscale as, CBOF, & CROF on my Mits. Everything else is pretty foreign I'll list all the ones I'd like an explanation of & any help anyone could provide would be appreciated.

abbreviations are as follows: DMDB, CWDL, CWDH, OPT3, OPT2, OPT1, PLLW5, PLLW4, PLLW3, PLLW2, PLLW1, PLLW0, CNTX, UVTT, COLC, BRTC, CNTCB, CNTCR, CNTCG

Also an explanation of which adjustments are global, are adjustments per input, or per scan rate or both? Are there any other menus that I haven't found & how are those accessed? Which color temp. settings do the cuts & drives adjust directly. Is there a way to cut out all but one primary @ a time to check for color decoding errors? Any light anyone could shed on how to better understand how my sets adjustment system works would be helpful & much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Greetings

Service manuals won't tell you that either. One is expected to know that already before looking at the service manual.

(If you have to ask ... then the service manual is not geared toward you. Not the target audience of the document.)

Actually what I'm after is a description of what the abbreviations stand for. In the service Manual for my Mits set, it did contain brief descriptions of abbreviation descriptions. As far as what each does, that I understand that's another question entirely. However at one point in time even the most advanced Techs, Calibrators, or Enthusiast had little or no knowledge. How does one learn if one does not ask? I don't fall into the category of advanced, not by a long shot. But I have learned quite a bit from similar forums & was under the impression that this was the purpose of such places on the Internet i.e. sharing of information. Perhaps I misunderstood?

Greetings

The repair people learned by going to repair school.

Repair manuals are not written for enthusiast ... so we have to figure it all out by ourselves.

Just as books on brain surgery do not teach you how to be a doctor first. Some level of knowledge is assumed on the part of the reader.

Yes ... ask your questions and do your research ... that's how we all learn ... but don't mistake a service document for something it is not.

For your set ... I recommend the old fashioned way ... trial and error ... the set won't break ...

Actually, it is unlikely that the information desired was ever taught to any tech in a school or trainng seminar. Most manufacturers don't provide much info on service menu settings at all. If it is available it may be in the service manual or the training doc, but I don't recall seeing it from Toshiba.

dginsd, if you want specific info, someone might be inclined to go check for you if you posted the exact model number of the set. Also, have you checked into getting a service manual? Toshiba manuals have typically been pretty cheap.

There are a few folks on the Tosh 83/84 Forum thread that may be able to help. I'd alsocheck out the Tosh dedicated threads for your model. I have the Serv Manual for an earlier model CRT and it does not list what the SM abbreviations mean (well except for a few simple ones).
