Hey guys,

I'm trying to decide between these three sets:

JVC HD61FN97
Sony KDS55A2020
Mitz WD-65731

I'll be connecting cable box via componant, PS3, and HD-A1 via HDMI. I'm replacing a faulty Westinghouse set, so I'm really concerened with reliability and working 1080p inputs.

I've purused the threads for each set, but they are over whelming.

Any thoughts you have would be great.

Thanks!

Hi Mike, I am in the same position as you are, looking for one of those same 3 sets. I had my mind set on all 3 at one point or another, after reading the entire JVC forum and a lot of the Sony forum I am still leaning towards the Sony. It seems that all 3 are good if they are setup properly. I have looked at them all at local stores and I keep gravitating back to the Sony, although in a store its nearly impossible to see what they can really do. They had the JVC and Sony right next to each other at BB the other day and I definitely saw SSE on the JVC and none on the Sony, the Mits was close by also but it didn't grab me like the other 2 did.
If I had to choose right now id say Sony, but unless you have to have the black look at the A2000 models also, supposed to be exactly like the A2020 models electronically. Could save you several hundred $$.

I've had the Mits 65731 since the first week in February and couldn't be happier. I too read a lot of posts, but that was after I bought the set. I had my cable box hooked up via component and it looked fine. I later hooked everything up via HDMI. There are a couple things I can tell you from experience. The set has a wow factor out of the box. After about a week, I thought the picture really wasn't that good(for the price). That's when I found alot of info on AVS about tweaking. I used the THX optimizer off one of the Star Wars dvds and adjusted the set. It looked really good after that. Then I borrowed the AVIA calibration disk from a friend. HD cable on the networks is now like a religious experience. I also bought an upconverting dvd player and calibrated the input for it. WOW.

To make a long story short, do not sell yourself short once you get a set. They all have their strong points. The Mits seems to be high quality and has less of the rainbow and silk screen effects as some of the other brands. Whatever you get, put some effort into bettering the factory settings. I did mine for free and couldn't be happier. Even if you bought the AVIA disk at $40 it is worth it. Also, if there are any issues with a new set, most of these can be fixed with a firmware update.

Yeah, I'm impressed by the Sony too. I'm just a bit nervous about the green blob. I didn't notice SSE with the JVC, but I'm going to check them out again after work.

I never took a real close look at the Mits, I liked the Samsung a bit better so i focused on that one more. However I bought the Sony A2000 and, after almost 8 months, it has been perfect, and so has the picture quality. It also works perfectly with the PS3.

Since the A2020 is basically the same set, I assume it will be just as good.

I'm replacing a 65" Mitsubishi CRT RPTV HDTV that is now 7 years old. I have been looking at the 65731, the 2020 and the XBR2. I went into the store thinking I was going to walk out with the Mitsubishi, but went home empty handed and now wondering what to get. The 731, looked terrible compared to the 2020 and the XBR2 and the Samsung near by. I asked if the sets had been calibrated and they had with AVIA. So with just that done, I would definitely give the nod to the 2020 or the XBR2, which looked identical to me. My wife likes the XBR2 styling better so she would like that, but I'm having a hard time justifying the cost. Just my 2 cents. :)

I checked them out again last night at BB, so God knows how the settings were. The JVC and the 2020 were better than the Mitz. Picture quality was close between the two. I did see a little flicker of SDE with the JVC, but I'm not sure if it would bother me. I'm just a bit nervous about the green blob effect on the 2020.

I'm going to check a specialty store to see them in better lighting.

I was comparing these as well (plus the Samsung) and I ended up with the Mitsubishi. When comparing all of them I was leaning towards the JVC because it looked the best followed closely by the Samsung. The Sony had the dullest picture to me and I was wary of the green blob and the Mitsubishi had the factory brilliant setting which looked real bright but the colors were overpowering (this was at best buy). I decided the JVC wasn't for me because it did not accept 1080p over the VGA input and the Samsung had the pincushion which would have annoyed me immensely. I found a deal on the Mitsubishi and I am very pleased with it, especially after giving the settings a good tweak which I am sure it could use some more.

Any particular reason your replacing that MITS CRT?

there are no green blob problems with sony a2000 or xbr2 sets. the green blob has manifested only in the 1st gen. sxrd sets, the xbr1s. there have been some reports of color uniformity problems with the a2000s (green and purple hazes/tints). however far majority or owners have no problems. almost no problems reported with xbr2 sets and clearly no green blob problems. sony seems to have solved green blob with new light engines on xbr2s.

That is good to know, I used to just skim the threads and would see mentions of it or people thinking they might have it so I decided not to take a chance. My friends mom just bought one and they love it so hopefully they wont have any problems.

Also keep in mind that what people call 'green blob' can vary pretty widely. I've had my KDS-60A2000 for roughly 5 weeks. At start up there is an area about a third of the way down and about half the width of the screen that is slightly green. It's very difficult to see unless you actually test for it (easiest way is to turn the color all the way down to zero and view it in black and white) and it's gone when the set warms up in about 15 minutes.

Is this green blob? Some would say yes, but unless it gets worse I'm fine with it. There is no perfect set out there and I'll take this over rainbows with DLP, poor contrast on LCD's, the price of plasmas for a big set (which is probably still only 720p unless you really bleed cash), or what I feel is the overly bright look of the JVC LCoS sets.

I've got a 55A2020 I'm very happy with. First one I bought had a few issues. If you are interested you can check out the A2020 thread. CC replaced my first unit and the replacement is working great. I looked at the Mits also but was looking at the 57732. Just liked the picture better on the A2000/A2020 sets.

I think they are all really great sets and any of them can have a potential problem but if you buy from a local dealer with a good return policy you should be ok. Get what looks best to your eyes and go from there.

Good luck.
