View Full Version : Velodyne dls4000 vs Svs pb12-nsd
bryanlesah 03-26-07, 08:59 AM I just recently purchased the Velodyne which does sound much better than the previous sub I had (Velodyne vx-10) but I need to know what differences between the Velo and the Svs, since they are the same price I would like to know if the svs is that much better.
mailiang 03-26-07, 11:45 AM Tom Nousaine measured the PB12 as follows:
Extension:20HZ @ 96db.
Max. output: 32HZ @ 109.4db
Average spl from 25 to 62HZ, 105db
Tom measured the DPS 12 ,which is similar to your 4000, as follows:
Extension: 20HZ @ 80db
Max. output:62hz 109db.
Average spl from 25 to 62HZ:103db.
Over all output is close but the SVS does it a lot better at deeper frequencys. No surprises here. ;)

Thanks for the reply, I guess I just need to know if it will sound cleaner. I don't want a ton of bass (I don't want to piss off the neighbor) so will the Svs sound better?
rockemsockem 03-26-07, 02:11 PM Without hearing those subs in the exact same room, calibrated to the actual system, there is no way to know for sure which will sound better.
All you can do is guess based on the published test data that is available, which only tells you what a subs strengths and weaknesses are, but not what it will 'sound' like.
My suggestion would be if you have the money, order the SVS and compare both subs in your home. If not, then just try to maximize the Velo in your room through proper calibration, placment, acoustic treatments, and a bit of EQ'ing.
Is there something you are looking for soundwise that the Velo is missing?
rockemsockem 03-26-07, 02:16 PM BTW, the figures that Ian posted show that both subs will play loud with low distortion, but the SVS sprints away from the Velodyne in terms of output < 25Hz, which is what gives you that room shaking effect in today's movies.
bryanlesah 03-26-07, 02:23 PM As far as I can tell the Velo is not missing anything. I just read alot on the Svs forums with the posters really rating the svs really high. I just want to make sure I made a good decision.
rockemsockem 03-26-07, 02:44 PM If the Velo you have IS comparable to the DPS-12, I would say you are missing alot of distortion free output <25 Hz. But in reality, that is <1% of the audio bandwidth. But to some subwoofer fanactics, it is the most important. It just depends on what your priorities are.
If you got a really good deal on the Velo, I would be happy with it, but if you paid retail, >$600-$700 for it, then I would seriously consider other options.
The SVS is a good one, as well as the LFM-1 Plus from Outlaw Audio, and the HSU Research VTF2-Mk3.
There are good retail brands subs out there, but generally, you get better bang for the buck with the ID dealers. You usually pay 25-40% more on retail brands to get equal performance. Of course, there are exceptions.
Ron Temple 03-26-07, 03:15 PM The Velo is a nice retail design, very good output / features and very musical above it's tuning point, somewhere in the mid to high 30hz range I think. The SVS is a large footprint, ported box sub that's tuned to 18hz. Thus, you'll get a much more visceral, but clean, sound on deep bass content. It's a beast compared to the DLS4000R and that's not a knock. It's bigger and sounds bigger when the source features the low stuff. If you are a movie first guy, you'll notice a great deal of difference. If you are into music, then the Velo stacks up quite well and I wouldn't change.
bryanlesah 03-26-07, 03:42 PM Thanks for everybody's input. I think I will take the Velo back and order the Svs. I do watch alot of movies so I want to make sure I am getting the best value. The velo cost me as much as the Svs would so I think it would be the best for me to exchange it.
Ron Temple 03-26-07, 09:15 PM Bryan, I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed. I love the higher end Velo products, but the retail stuff at the ID pricepoint is a tough sell if you don't need a small footprint. Enjoy...
bryanlesah 03-26-07, 09:25 PM Thanks Ron, I have officially returned the Velo and now it is time to order the Svs I admit I have no patience it will be hard for me to wait, but it sound like it will be worth it.
I would like to thank everyone here once again for pointing me in the right direction, you guys have helped me a time and time again.

Good choice Bryan. Not my favorite SVS choice, but that is because I would have spent more on a Plus. One thing you will notice where the Velo is better is in the aesthetics. The low end SVS subs are not the prettiest girl at the dance. But for most, that's OK. I have a +/2, which is an even bigger ugly box, but after a while, I don't even notice it. And mine is right out in the open.
If you learn anything from this forum, it should be that a sub is not a plug-n-play speaker. Some have been very disappointed with their SVS sub (as well as other OEMs) performance. Until they found the best settings and location. You will have to play around some to get the most out of it.
Good luck.

Boy, ain't that the truth! ;)

bryanlesah 03-27-07, 08:59 AM How do you recommend I setup the Svs, I know room placement is a big one, room treatment, and the radio shack spl meter, am I missing anythine else?
