View Full Version : quick question about background downloading???
vincentnyc 03-26-07, 10:37 AM i know the latest firmware allow u to download stuff from the ps store in the background. when i was playing a game online...i notice it didnt download anything from the ps store until i finish my online game.
so my question is...what else will background downloading not work? how about surfing the web on ur ps3? playing music? watching blu-movie movie? playing a game offline?
i dont really see how background downloading is useful if they dont allow it while u are playing an online game.
Jiffylush 03-26-07, 10:40 AM It pauses while you play online, just like the 360.
I am more concerned with there not being anything new worth downloading.
Slacker George 03-26-07, 10:44 AM Watching movies (DVD or blu-ray) stops background downloads as well. I think that's the only other thing. It's a bit much to expect to play online and download as well. Why would you want to hurt your bandwidth when playing online?
Slacker George 03-26-07, 10:50 AM Few more things. Here's the full list from Sony:
When playing a Blu-ray Disc or DVD
When using network features of online games
When starting PlayStation®2 format software
When starting (Folding@home™)
When using voice / video chat
When performing a system update
When adjusting setting items under (Settings)

ok i understand not able to download stuff while playing online. BUT WHAT for playing blu-ray/dvd movie? u can't download stuff while watching movie?
so wtf they made background downloading for? it is useless then.
how about surfing the web even thoughi i dont do that much on my ps3. what about watching a youtube video on the web?
TwinTurboJosh 03-26-07, 11:00 AM I find it so bizarre that the downloads continue while you load a game, but can't when you play a BD movie. Being able to download while I watch a movie is the number one thing I was looking for. Oh well.
vincentnyc 03-26-07, 11:39 AM so just to clear it up..what CAN u do then on ur ps3 so background downloading will download it stuffs?
vincentnyc 03-26-07, 11:40 AM i think sony is trying rush this feature w/o thinking what ppl really want. maybe they are fooling some ppl about this feature. but now me!

Um... you CAN do other stuff instead of waiting for a download to finish.
You can queue other downloads.
You can also play PS3 games offline (and I imagine the demos as well).
I think it's a useful feature. I didn't enjoy having to wait 5 minutes for 800 mb to download, even if my connection is fast.

You can play games (just not online - like 360).
vincentnyc 03-26-07, 02:04 PM what about surfing the web on ur ps3? can u do that and still be downloading stuff from the ps store?

Yes it will still download while you surf the web.
Edit: they probably don't allow backround downloading while watching BD movies due the network interactivity BD's will have later on.

i dont get it...they allow you to surf the web while it is doing background downloading and not play online? i think someone would argue that surfing the web won't take the much bandwidth...but what happen when u are watching ncaa, mlb, fox 24, nbc snl online? im sure those take up alot of bandwidth.
and how is network interactivity BD have any effect on background downloading? so far there is no blu-ray movie that has network interactivity bd out there. and even if they have...what...is there some type of game where u play online against other ppl? watch video? view web pages? so i dont buy this bull crap.

I hope all those sites support FLV playback, otherwise you won't be watching a thing. Regardless, those movies are typically streaming and with variable bit-rates. And if you're clip doesn't buffer as fast as you'd like that's one thing, and probably not that big of an annoyance. It only affects you. But if you're lagging big time in an online game, I'd imagine that would be far more of an annoyance to you, and completely unacceptable to many of those you're playing with. Some online game probably don't require so much bandwidth that things couldn't download in the background. However, excluding background download via all online games avoids any potential conflict.

They have not announced any particular reason as to why its disabled during BD playback. I doubt the possible network interactivity functions have anything to do with it (although I don't know what the BDA requirements are for that). There was probably some other consideration that we're not aware of. If you're really that mad about, why don't you email SCEA and ask them what’s going on and express your desire to have BGD enabled during BD playback. Complaining about it here won't likely solve anything.

Yes, maybe there is a reason why...maybe it signs you out of the PS3 network when you play a BD movie...So if you are signed out of the PS3 network, you can not background download?
I did this test over the weekend....Multiple Account Background Downloads! (MABD) Yea baby! Nobody thought about trying this!
I signed into the PS Network with my UK account. I went to the UK PS3 Store and background downloaded two videos, then i signed out while i was still downloading and signed into the the PS Network with my US account and went to the US PS3 Store and background downloaded 2 movie trailers, then signed out and then signed into the the PS network with my Japan account. I then went to the Japan PS Store and downloaded a game, then signed out and signed back into the PS Network with my US account and then went to the download manager, and all 5 items downloaded! So you can download from multiple accounts and stores and the same time!
Oh well I thought it was cool, at least it worked!
TyrantII 03-26-07, 05:55 PM as stated it's most likely to bluray's internet interactive req's, and while it's not on any current movies, it's most likely still a requirement and was implement to keep people from experiencing problems in the future.
Now, just load up folding@home and stop ur biatching!

LMAO!!! as matter of fact im thinking of getting rid of ps3 since i mainly use it to watch blu-ray movie. i have blockbuster online for about 2-3 months...then i got fed up with them with not delivery blu-ray on time or "throttling" and cancel them 3 weeks ago...so now i have no blu-ray movie with my ps3...you should see my other thread complaining about bb online.
so i got i samsung hd tuner and it is working beautifully..giving me free hd content to watch...so right now im contemplating getting rid of ps3...lol.
