View Full Version : Motorstorm - No 5.1 Sound with Onkyo 604?
FadeToOne 03-26-07, 12:07 PM I had a Pioneer receiver with optical hooked up to my PS3. As far as I noticed, the 5.1 surround output worked fine.
On Friday I set up my new Onkyo 604. Most everything works as I expect it to; uncompressed 5.1 works on blu-ray (spectacular), DVDs work fine (although better in bitstream on HDMI - I wish there was a way to change that setting on the fly), and ps2 games work fine (but appears I have to change to optical to do sound processing from 2 channels to 5.1).
Motorstorm, however, comes out in only my left and right speakers, and a little from my subwoofer. The front center and both rear speakers get no audio at all. There aren't any settings in Motorstorm, and I've tried pretty much every option via the XMB settings. HDMI shows up as multichannel pcm when I have it set to linear PCM OR bitstream (don't understand that) and optical will show up as Dolby Digital D/EX 3/2.1 but I still only get sound out of the two speakers.
Anybody have any idea what the deal is? I can speculate the March 23rd firmware update or Motorstorm online update *could* have done something, since I installed both around the same time I changed the receiver, but I haven't seen anybody else having a similar problem, and my friend says his Motorstorm works fine.
For the sake of clarity, assume I know what I'm doing (ie. don't insist I'm an idiot and don't have the speakers connected properly or something) :)
What mode do you have your 604 in? I have the 804 (604 with more power and THX) Motorstorm via HDMI works fine for me. Im at 1.6 and run my 804 in Surround mode. If I have it in "Direct" mode. it doesnt process it as well. You can always go into sound settings and Uncheck all of your 5.1 and 7.1 settings. This forces the PS3 to send everything as either 2ch PCM or Dolby Digital. Then your 604 can add any processing it wants to these signals. Problem is. You lose that lossless audio for BD movies, with this set up.
FadeToOne 03-26-07, 12:24 PM I've tried both direct and surround on HDMI. On optical I get full surround if I set it to All channel or mono, if I recall. I didn't even get surround in Pro Logic IIx which was extremely weird.
james21 03-31-07, 09:15 AM I was just searching for anyone having the same problem.
I am having that problem since the online update.
I just updated last night. Went to play Motorstorm.
Only the Bass is being sent through optical.
I pass the surround to my Yamaha receiver through optical.
I can assure you it is not my settings or cables.
Everything is still perfect with Resistence's surround.
Just like you, when I change it to mono or 6 Channel stereo, it works fine.
But, not true surround.
Keep me posted if you find any solutions.
I'll do the same.
You are not going insane.
FadeToOne 03-31-07, 12:28 PM Which update? I verified it was NOT the Motorstorm update. I did this by deleting the update from the game data on the XMB.
james21 04-01-07, 12:20 AM I did the 1.6 update. Then about 30 minutes later went online to play Motorstorm and was asked to install that update.
So, do you think it's something in 1.6?
I tried it out again since my first post.
This time I cranked it in surround mode to have a closer listen.
The music is coming from the rear channels. But, very tin sounding.
I can hear people chatting though the center channel.
The Left and Right channels seem to be silent.
and the Sub is at full rumble.
I also ran into another problem I've read about on a couple posts.
While joining in on a race. It suddenly kicked me out and I was in XMB!
Never had that happen before.
[Added]
I also checked out some of the new settings within XMB.
In the audio settings where you specify what you want your PS3 to pass-through.
The bottom 2 options (PCM something) are selected and grayed out.
I did have these selected previously. But, they weren't grayed out.
Is it possible that this is forcing a conflict or causing some sort of confusion with the bitstream or the receiver?
cooper1010 04-04-07, 06:50 PM I just bought Motorstorm today. I have my PS3 hooked up to my Yamaha rx-v 661 via HDMI.
When I popped the game in, I commented to my wife (and she agreed) that it sounded awesome; the music and sound effects were distinctly coming out of every speaker (5.1). I played w/ my receiver settings a little, but purposefully left it on "straight" (PCM) to play the game. I played about three rounds before trying the online games, at which point it asked me to perform an update. I did, I rebooted the system, started the game, and instantly noticed I was only getting sound from two speakers. I checked my settings on the XMB, but everything looked fine there. My receiver indicated that it was getting 7.1 PCM from the PS3, but it was definitely only coming out of the two front speakers.
This is clearly an issue with the game update. Anyone know when it was released? I'm surprised I can't find anymore info on the internet about it.
FadeToOne 04-04-07, 06:53 PM Did you try removing the update from the game menu? I did that and it didn't help the sound... so I have no idea what that's about...
cooper1010 04-04-07, 06:59 PM My wife kicked me off. I'll try that after she goes to bed. But, all signs point to the game update; that's all I did between getting 5.1 and 2.0 sound.

ok, I did it, and it totally fixed it. I'm back to all speakers outputting. Funny that it didn't work for you, though.
james21 04-07-07, 12:49 PM FadeToOne,
I'll try removing the update.
See if it makes a difference for me.
I'll Report back later.
FadeToOne 04-07-07, 12:59 PM Ah ha! I finally got around to trying again and removing the update DOES fix it for optical. HDMI still gets 2 channel though. Must have only tried HDMI the last time. Not sure what that's about, but I can live with setting it to optical and chaning to HDMI when I want to watch uncompressed Blu-Ray.

HDMI is my only output and I get 5.1. Maybe it's a setting in the XMB?

Not such happy results on my end.
I removed the Motorstorm patch.
I am still having the same problems. That is on Optical. I don't have HDMI.
Cooper1010, What firmware are you at? 1.6?
I am really confused now that FadeToOne is getting 5.1 Surround on Optical.
bschellva 04-08-07, 07:11 PM Same problem here. I use HDMI with an Onkyo 604 and only get sound out of left & right front speakers in Motorstorm. :( I'll have to try removing the update and see what happens.
Wow... I still have zero problems with 5.1 from Motorstorm, even after the online update. I run my 804 in Direct mode (stright PCM) from the PS3 which is putting our 3/2.1 for motorstorm...
cooper1010 04-09-07, 08:56 AM Cooper1010, What firmware are you at? 1.6?
Yup, 1.6.
You guys are getting 5.1/7.1 from other sources, it's just Motorstorm that's not outputting correctly?
donricouga 04-09-07, 11:41 AM Anyone with a marantz sr*001 receiver had this trouble and got it fixed ? Specifically, it would be better if it was a sr7001
Is it only people that are processing audio over HDMI or optical ? Bitstream or PCM ?
bschellva 04-09-07, 11:49 AM Well, I removed the Motorstorm update and there was no change. Nothing at all out of the center speaker. All other games seem to work fine - Resistance, Ridge Racer. Blu-Ray and DVD work as expected. Marvel Ultimate Alliance shows on the receiver that it is outputting Dolby Digital over HDMI, which I didn't even know the PS3 could do over HDMI.
james21 04-12-07, 04:49 PM Yeah, for me it's just Motorstorm giving me problems.
The receiver (Yamaha RX-V550) shows that it's receiving 5 channels.
But, it's not delivering surround.
But, resistance is definitely in surround.
So, it's only Motorstorm that's having problems.
Yup, 1.6.

james21 04-13-07, 06:16 PM Anyone else who finds this thread.
I've come across a thread at AVForums where a dev from Evolution Studios has acknowledged that this is a known issue now and they are working on a fix that will be updated through an online update, soon hopefully.
Here is the post: (sorry to mods if mentioning another forum is a no-no. I'm only trying to help our members out.)
Hey guys, Rushy here from Evolution studios. I'd like to thank you for raising the issue, and giving us so many details to work with.
We will rectify this issue as soon as possible via a game update. Sorry for any inconvenience.
Let's hope this is the real thing.
Florentm 05-24-07, 04:13 PM it's now working with the 1.8 firmware on my marantz 4001 in HDMI

Nice. I'll have to play with it. Is this with or without the online update?
Florentm 05-24-07, 04:24 PM with the update
FadeToOne 05-24-07, 10:57 PM Score! Works like a champ! I get full 7.1 now, which I wasn't expecting.
Thanks for the heads up!
Florentm 07-26-07, 05:32 PM it's not working again with 1.90
only stereo sound!!!
and you ?
FadeToOne 07-27-07, 12:01 PM It's working fine for me, possibly even better than it did before. I don't recall getting 5.1/7.1 during the vehicle selection, but I was when I just tested it.
NBA 07 still hangs if you start up with 7.1 PCM enabled in the audio settings. I really wish they'd fix that.
