View Full Version : Not the Normal Black Bar Question. Help Needed.

First and foremost, I'm quite familiar with the aspect ratios of movies and the generation of black bars. I'm ok with them especially if the TV is set up properly that the bars are equal in size. But here is my dilemma:

I have a Sony KDF-50WE655 (GWIV) hooked up to a HD D*tivo via component, a DVB318 upscaling DVD via component, and a PS3 via HDMI. I had the TV calibrated with DVE and centered the image of the rear projection in the service menu to match the DVD player (ie black bars of equal size on extrawide leterboxed DVD's) and HD tivo so the 4:3 channel black bars are equall too.

So I hook up a PS3 via HDMI and all seems well until I play some BR and DVD's too. I noticed that on The Wild (BR) - there was a 1/4" black bar on the bottom of the screen as if the RP image was shifted to high. On World Trade Center (BR) I noticed a 1/2" black bar at the top of the screen. On Shrek 2 (dvd) played on the PS3 I get the 1/4" bar on the bottom again, yet on the DVD player = complete screen coverage. On Babel (BR) there is complete screen filling. All of the movies listed are should have full 16X9 screen images. All games play fine and fill the screen entirely.

I can adjust the overscan (options are -1, normal, +1) from -1 to normal and the issue goes away but that seems like a simple zoom fix. I have "fixed" the problem by entering the service menu and lifting the projected image (decreasing the DPVH = vertical position) and stretching it downward (MDVS = vertical size) untill it fills the screen naturally (and shifted (DHPH) /stretched the horizontal image (MDHS) to accomodate too). But this seems like a horrible idea and I'm leaning towards using the overscan feature.

A user in the BR forum section suggests that I need to get the TV professionaly cailbrated and adjusted for geometry/overscan. I just don't get why the PS3 over HDMI is giving the TV trouble while all my other equipment is just fine.

Would any of the professional calibrators like to offer their assistance via this thread. I mean I'm quite proficient with the service menu and I don't feel that moving, adjusting the image really is going to take that much. I just would like to do it properly. Now if I'm completely off base and this is way to complicated to discuss online - how much would it cost for just an overscan/geometry calibration as I am not looking for a color/picture calibration.

Thank you very much in advance for the advice.

Maybe because HDMI has a different optimal positioning. Even normal funtions like brightness and contrast don't always translate from component to hdmi.

Oh - I absolutely agree. I am just trying to get a happy medium. Would you recommend shifting/streching the image (or do you know of something better) or just using the overscan feature of the tv (which I figure is a zoom feature). The image on the TV needs to be positioned for optimal viewing across all 3 sources. I't painful to see some BR come across fine but then others appear shifted. I just feel there aught to be an appropriate way to center the screen for 3 sources.

2 questions.

1. I am using a DVE calibration disk to set brightness & picture. When I use the component input, I can easily adjust and see the blackest vertical cal bar, however, when I use the HDMI input, i can set the brightness and picture to +30 (max) and no bars appear. What's happening? Clipping?

2. When I stand 45 degress off axis to the screen, i can see a mirror image of the screen (appears to be about 1.5" towards rear of front panel. It is most evident on menu systems or where there are clear distinctions between dark and bright. What's happening?
