We've probably all joked about the "lousy picture quality" on HD Radio (where'd they get the name, anyway?), but a question came up this morning....

Does anyone make an AM/FM tuner with a video output of it's "operating screen"? We were talking about, something that could be operated by IR remote control, while "watching" the controls on a TV somewhere else....a visual form of feedback.
The idea was, to be able to operate the AM/FM tuner via a Slingbox, but it could also be used in a "whole-house" distribution system, as well.

So, if there is such a device, would there be a potential market for it to include HD Radio, too? Also, we wanted to avoid PC's with tuner cards, since that would require a separate computer and lots of "reboot-type" attention.

HD Radio (where'd they get the name, anyway?)
The HD stands for "hybrid digital". (I was much relieved when I read that, after thinking "some idiot gave it a stupid marketing name to make people associate it with high definition TV".)

Regarding tuners with video outputs, I think there are many receivers on the market that have video outputs (menus) used when adjusting their settings. My JVC receiver is apparently one of the few newer non-basic receivers that does not have a video menu.

Actually the HD doesn't really stand for anything (or stands for everything...as with DVD...digital video disc? Digital versatile disc?)

The term HD came at the VERY last minute, and it IS meant to invoke the "image" (pardon the pun) in your mind of something high tech...like HDTV. It's like the "S" in Harry S. Truman. What does the "S" stand for? Whatever you like...Truman didn't have a middle name ;)

DVD officially stands for Digital Versatile Disc, many people mistakenly substitute, Versatile for Video. (heck... my grandpa calls any 12CM disc a "CD")

HD is more a marketing than anything. Envision for a moment what was going through the heads of marketing folks when debating between the name "HD Radio" and "IBOC"

Picture a bunch of construction workers talking over lunch break:
"So, man... I got one of them new IBOC radios in my new F150"
"What the [random expletive here] does IBOC mean? Is it like iPod er somthin'?"

"So, man... I got one of them new HD Radios in my new F150"
"Oh... so, it's like more better than anuhlog radio? Is it like HDTV?"
"Yea, them stations don't sound fuzzy no more"

[Needless to say, it's pretty obvious why they chose HD Radio]

Actually different members of the alliance that created DVD have given different versions of what DVD stood for. The most repeated IS, however "Digital Versatile Disc". If, however, you and I cooperate on the production of a product, and we agree to call it, say "TNT", but you say "TNT" stands for "Tall 'n Toned", and I say it stands for "Terrifying and Toasty", then it really doesn't stand for anything...hence my point.
