Why can't I use the product name ********** in posts? That's b i t t o r r e n t. Is it against the rules to talk about this legal widely used product for some reason or is the word being blocked to prevent adding the torrent protocol links in the posts?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post the question. I searched but couldn't find the info.
Thanks.

Hello...
Based on the issue that it was being used to direct people to downloading of (c) files. That is after all the major use of the system. It had become an issue on the site and we look to stay clear of such things as we can.

David,
Bit Torrent happens to be a legal company selling DRM'd content from Warner Bros, MTV, 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Spike, Comedy Central etc etc etc. The method of file sharing is also used by major *NIX distributions and other software distributors.
Do you have a specific policy about talking about this company and it's products today? I didn't see anywhere in your rules that we could not talk about this product or any other products. It seems to me the baby is getting thrown out with the bath water.
The members on this site disucuss many products that may have multiple uses. In this specific case I think your censorship of the word/product/service and moderators treatment of members talking about the product is unfortunate.
I've made the company aware so that they are able to persuade you to allow fair discussions on this site.

Hi...
We are aware of how the word is used on this site...and that is as a term, not as a company. Seeing it had become an issue on this site such as "Use a bit torrent to download that movie from here" we decided we did not care to become a link site for such files or posts. Policing it became an issue.
More to the point of the issue at hand can be read about here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit Torrent#Copyright_enforcement (Remove the space)
More than happy to work with the company itself, but the issue is the term and how it is used here.
Side note...
Just did a quick scan of the database here....The term as used on this site is almost always related to (c) downloads. But there are some where it would not have been an issue, but the member just cleared up the text. Example of what we are looking to not have an issue with as is usually the case here...

Have a go, this site is great, lots of 720p/1080i/1080p movies. Lots in x264, some in xvid/WMV-HD, and lots in the .ts/mpeg2 transport stream.
Just make sure to upload as long as you can, becuase if you leach too much, you will get banned from the tracker!
Thanks.
I completely understand the point and your interest in automating the moderation of the site.
If I understand you correctly your policy is:
Restrict posts linking to sites are designed specifically to infringe be it bit torrent or otherwise.
Restrict direct linking to any content using the torrent protocol specifically
Allow discussion and metnion of all products including bit torrent
Do I have an accurate understanding of your position?

We have no hard fast policy other than we look at the issue that are made and make calls on how best to handle them. You made an nice outline on it though. We try to live by the spirit of the rule and not the letter of the law. (aka, our rules of use)
We state in the user agreement/rules...
"... this is not the place to talk about illegal downloads or how to obtain them. There are several forums on the Internet dedicated for discussing this type of material. This is not one of them."
Seeing that Bit Torrents were mention in this regard, it was and issue and this is one way we try to protect the site for such activity.
