Does anyone have any idea whether or not Fox will carry their weekly Saturday games in HD this year?

Yes. Fox said they will carry all games in HD this year.

Well earlier threads here stated that all games will be in HD, but the adds I've seen over the last week, they have an "HD" symbol only next to one of the regional games.

Looks like just one game a week to start the season.

The mobile units are leased, what they use for the NFL has no effect on MLB coverage.

To slightly contradict my previous post...

HDSportsGuide.com has all three games listed in HD. Those folks are not perfect, but for the most part, their lists are usually correct (Wish I could just get them to list the Live Bull Riding on Versus).

From http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6524072

"The 2007 FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK slate presently features 22 different teams playing in as many as 72 games, most of which are presented in High Definition for the first time. The final two Saturdays of the regular season are designated as "wild card" dates, allowing FOX Sports to choose up to three games on each date with postseason, record-setting or other compelling implications. The weekly MLB on FOX schedule consists of up to three regionalized games, all in the same window, beginning at 3:30 PM ET."

I guess it depends on who is playing if they want to put out a 2nd or 3rd HD truck. I would think that if its the first weekend, that you'd want to put everything in HD and start off on a good note.

I'm gonna "guess" the following...

If the home team's network normally does HD, FOX will "piggyback" the truck for the Saturday game.... at least that's what I think should happen.... There really is no reason for this not to happen now that FOX is investing the $$ to rent HD trucks weekly....

In San Diego, Petco Park has its own built-in HD facilities. They send their signal directly to Cox who farms out the signal through their system (and also to the local TWC system). Makes sense, both logistically and $$$ wise) for the Fox games (as well as ESPN) to use the available facilities.

I know Cox has a truck they send out when the Padres play their road games at NL West sites (we get those games in HD as well as home games).

I saw a commercial during the NASCAR race, and the only game with an HD tag next to it was the Mets/Braves game.

Are you sure that Cox uses the built in facilities when doing home games? I have read that they use their mobile unit for home games as well as those against the NL West.

The Staples Center also has their own facilities, but I hear they hardly get used. Fox Sports West / Prime Ticket which does many of the events there uses Mobile Television Group mobile units for their productions. It makes alot of sense to use mobile units rather then built in facilities because the amount of use that mobile units get mean that they can be updated with the latest technologies on a regular basis. One could not justify the cost of a modern production facility at a stadium that would only be used ~81 times a year. Other issues such as having the right graphics systems for each broadcaster (not all prefer the same system), plus other equipment (K-zone for ESPN) come into play for this decision. Using the same truck for a series of broadcast like ESPN does for Sunday Night Baseball also helps with workflow and preproduction issues.

Lameness, I pledged this year I would not have to watch one red sox game in standard definition. Looks like there is a good chance that will not happen.

Let's hope they take into account whether a game is in hd or not when deciding which game out of market viewers see, but I doubt it.

Remember FOX targets market with specific ads. So if you are watching the same program in New York and LA, both markets would show the same commercial tailored to the market so it is completely plausable that BOTH games would be in HD but the game shown in that market would be highlighted in the ad.

According to all the intelligence I have been able to gather, that promo is correct. Only the Giants/Dodgers game will be HD on Saturday, April 7.

Hmmm, I wonder if they are somehow putting the logo next to the game that you will be getting regionally. Because, I have seen the logo next to the Braves/Mets game in the promos here on the east coast.

In addition to what jefbal99 said, the information that they sent out to stations originally had the Braves/Mets game as the sole HD game, but then they sent revised information the next day, and only the Giants/Dodgers game as shown as being HD.

Fox: Baseball In HD Not 'Scaled Back'

The network says "most" games will be in high-def.
By Phillip Swann

Washington, D.C. (April 3, 2007) -- Fox Sports today denied reports that it's reducing the number of Saturday afternoon baseball games in High-Definition.

Fox will broadcast three Major League Baseball games every Saturday afternoon, starting this week.

Dan Bell, a Fox Sports spokesman, told TVPredictions.com today that the premiere game will always be in high-def and many of the "second" games will be as well.

"There is no scaling back," Bell said.

Fox Sports announced in February that "most" of the Saturday games would be in high-def. Bell said that description still applies.

"We never put a number on the games that would be in high-def," he said. "But most of the games will be in HD."

Rumors circulated last week that Fox was reducing the number of high-def games when an online guide posted a note saying that Fox was 'scaling back' its coverage due to insufficient HD production truck availability.

The report was quickly picked by some gadget blogs and message boards.

However, Bell said that some apparently misinterpreted the network's original announcement.

"We said most games, not all," he said. "The goal is to have all, but we will have most."

Fox's triple-header coverage begins this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET with the New York Mets playing the Atlanta Braves; the Minnesota Twins vs. the Chicago White Sox; and the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. the San Francisco Giants. The Dodgers-Giants game will be in high-def.

And the word games begin. Ultimately, after they start showing games, we will be the ones who decide whether fox has been misleading or not.

Hmmm, if "the premiere game will always be high-def," wouldn't the Mets/Braves game fit that category for the first weekend? Surely that is going to be carried on a lot more stations than the Giants/Dodgers ...

Just hope that they're not in FOX "composite video" Widescreen (like they were last season), because that is hideous.

And the word games begin. Ultimately, after they start showing games, we will be the ones who decide whether fox has been misleading or not.Well, they're already misleading us.

First off, they say "most" of their games will be in HD. Well, they're already heading down the wrong path, as only 1/3 of their opening Saturday games are in HD.

Secondly, according to their own page, only 20% of their viewership is getting the Giants/Dodgers game, the only one of the three televised games that's in HD, so in theory only 20% of Fox households will get an HD game on Saturday.

That doesn't sound like "most" no matter how you look at it. Hopefully things will get better from here on out, but man, that's a pretty ugly start.
