View Full Version : Battlestations: Midway
I have been reading and looking at this game real hard. This could be the one that convinces me to buy a 360 (even though the overheating issue worries me).
Has anyone tried this one on the 360. I know it started out as a pc game didn't it? Anyway if you have played it I was wondering what your thoughts on it were. You know the usual stuff what did you like about it and what did you hate about it? If I got it maybe I could pick it up used.
Lots of potential, but not much else. How they didn't include a random battle generator on this I don't know. If they had done that, this would be one of my favorite games. As it is, the campaign is short, uninspired, and decidedly stupid.
robshdtv 03-26-07, 10:28 PM Not a run and gunner by far. A good idea definately but the execution is a little poor. The graphics are almost Xbox 1ish and the controls are a little confusing. My buddies and I tried to play online and at best found a half dozen games.
If you like the Halo series, Battlefield, COD, or any other first person shooter this will probably be a bust for you. Gears of War, COD (series), PGR3, etc.. should be what convinces you that a 360 is worth a buy, certainly not this one....
I thought the graphics were great. The ship models are really good, and the sea and sky are nice. The historical inaccuracies bother me as much as anything--they put so much effort into getting the models right, and then can't get the names and performance right? Sloppy.
It just feels unfinished.
robshdtv 03-27-07, 12:46 AM Yeah unfinished would be a good description. The graphics are not bad but I didn't see anything that "stood out". GOW and GRAW have a lot of eye candy so maybe I was expecting to much. The single player was a joke and my buddies and I bought it for the multi-play. Maybe if more people pick it up and get online the online play can be a little more challenging. It seems like every game we jumped in was just a duplicate of the last, not much variety. Anyhow my $.02.
2.5 out of 5.
FrankJ.Cone 03-27-07, 07:23 AM Like nothing else on consoles.
Its a RTS game in 3D. And you can control any unit in 3D. So send two squadrons of torpedo planes at a Battleship and one squadron of fighters as escort. Jump into a torpedo and attack the ship or jump into a fighter and supply support. Or heck let the A.I. handle it and bring your destroyer in and finish the job the planes started.
Graphics are not mind blowing but they are good. There are plenty of videos and screenshots on the web.

I know this game isn't a graphical beast but I wasn't expecting that. I am showing my age here but I loved to play Dungeons and Dragons in school and these types of games appeal more to me than Halo etc. most of the time. The thing that really annoys me about FPS games is the fact you get 3/4's of the way through a level and now you have to go back to almost the beginning to get something to unlock a door, lower a bridge etc before you can finish the level. What has convinced me about the 360 are some of the sports titles that are out there.
Thanks for the input though.
oktoberrust11 03-27-07, 12:19 PM For me, it was a mild disappointment. I couldn't stay interested in the game. Kind of got frustrated with it and set it aside. Maybe I'll pick it up again soon (595 more points to complete that first challenge :D).

Agreed. I too am from the time before consoles...(cough 36) and I enjoy a good RTS from time to time. I never thought I would be playing FPS games on a console after many years of pc gaming. But that's how good these consoles have gotten over the years. Now I guess the RTS will have to evolve on these things and I'm sure in no time I will adapt to that and be satisfied. Command and Conquer (series), Total Annihilation, Age of Empires, etc.. were a blast on the pc. I'm interested to see how those types of games morf on to the conslole platforms.
Anyhow don't mean to thread jack. Battlestations is good, I just wish they spent a little more time on the multi-player aspects. The concept is on track. I mean with Live and the 360 if the game does not get wide spread online gaming support it almost always fizzles away.....
Soon to be 39 yikes  .
Where's my Geritol but I need either a beer or Jack and Coke to wash it down.
Well I haven't bought the game yet. I got the demo. It is a lot of fun from what I have played. The only time I didn't like it was when there weren't many playing. Then you had to run all around to control everything and it didn't leave you much time for enjoyment. I really dig the whole "Battleship" 3D concept they have going on though. Once I get all the way through GRAW2 and Gears I think I will pick it up.
lacombo 03-28-07, 01:29 AM The demo was fun but didnt know anyone getting it to actually buy it.
can def be worth it if a good crew is always on.
BearGator56 03-29-07, 06:07 AM 35 here... You had to be around for the Atari 2600, right? :)
I got the game because it looked cool, and BB or CC had it on sale for 39 bucks (can't remember which). Can't beat saving 20 bucks on a 360 game.
Anyways... I agree with what a few have said here. The game had a lot of promise, but the single player campaign mode just feels like it's missing something. The missions aren't that difficult, although the controls can be. I haven't gotten a chance to play it on Live, but I think that is where this game could really shine. Playing against a human opponent would be much more challenging and fun.
The graphics were fine to me. Only GOW and GRAW2 have really stood out above anything else so far. I'd rate it a 3 out of 5 so far. Online play may increase it to 3.5, but it's just not as fun as GRAW2 for me. Rent it and check it out.

I sure was. I even remember a system from Radio Shack that was cartridge based and it had two numerical keypads on each side. It had some kind of bowling game on it and some other games as well. I didn't have a 2600 but I had tons of friends that did. Mom and dad bought me an Intellivision.

That is nothing...I still have a working pong system. Makes me feel old. lol I showed my nephews it once and they were like..."This sucks!"
I picked up the game on Saturday. I think it is a lot of fun. I only really have been playing the sub and plan challenges though. I haven't even done the single player yet. This weekend I will go online and see how that is. I am hoping that this games attracts a more mature crowd.
newfmp3 05-01-07, 09:46 AM Have you considered oblivion? A dungeons and dragons player should love it. I'm also in the umm, 30'ish range :(
Corvall 05-03-07, 11:16 AM I really love this game, although I won't disagree with others who said it's lacking in some areas (mostly a 'skirmish' mode). It's really best when you've got people you know to play with. I've got a group that we get together online every Wednesday to get some BSM in, and it's always a great time. If you (or anyone else) picks up this game and wants to play online, swing on by www.seasonedgamers.com, and we'll help you get the most out of it.

ooPAYNEoo 05-03-07, 12:18 PM I tried the demo bundled in OXM. I didn't have a clue as to how to control anything, but after 15 minutes, I figured out the basics, like move and shoot...oh and change to fighter pilot mode!
I spent 2 and a half hours in MP! I don't know... There is something about having lots of controls and options that excites me... Also there tends to be a more mature crowd that plays this, so I didn't get cursed out for not knowing what I was doing.
Would have been better if I knew what I was doing, and why..!

The full game has a long tutorial/training mode that shows you how to do everything. I haven't had the chance to play it much since my last post but I hope to soon. Stupid real life getting in the way. LOL
crownvic96 11-29-07, 02:33 PM Is anyone still playing this game online? How are you liking it so far?

Thanks for bumping a 9 month old tread!:p

I stopped playing it a couple months ago. I enjoyed the strategy aspect of it, but there's very few people playing online now and the bugs in the game were very annoying.
Hopefully the next one will be better.

jason10mm 11-30-07, 08:11 AM This is a tough game genre. Midway was both too arcadish but too complicated, IMHO. The ships were modelled very simply but trying to jump around to control everything got complicated. I would have prefered to be just one ship/plane in a mission, OR be the tactical commander with appropriate levels of control. Trying to be both was tough, especially with the joke of a sub. Still, I enjoyed it. Not worth $60 by any means though. More of a $30 game.
