BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Creator Ron Moore says that he doesn't
think about HD when doing the show . . . . but that he likes it.

TVWeek: There's a real difference watching "BSG" on Sci Fi and when it airs on UHD months later in HD and 5.1 Surround Sound. Has this lag time been frustrating that viewers aren't watching the original airings the way it was shot?

Mr. Moore: I don't see it that way. We don't cut it in HD. When I sit in the Avid room, it's not in HD. As a practical day-to-day matter, there's no reason for me to be watching it in HD. ... When it comes out on UHD months later, I'm usually sort of surprised. "It's gorgeous! Look at that, you can see the reflection on the glass and everything." My head isn't geared toward HD at all.

Hmmmmm, what does this mean, Ron.

SOMEbody sure thinks about HD cuz it looks great . . .

Interesting that the HD seems more important to us fans of the show than it does to the show's creator.

Interesting . . . . .

All I know is that I pray to a whole pantheon of gods that they'd release BSG on xbox live video marketplace after each episode airs.

i suppose alot of producers/directors are like this...for example: The Shield Season 5 comes out tomorrow on DVD and it is a 4:3 aspect ratio(of course there was reasoning behind this but nevertheless it is annoying IMO).

I tried to withstand the 10 week wait for the reairings of battlestar galactia (BSG) on UniversalHD, but I just couldnt do it and last night I broke down and watched 6 episodes in a row...as i was watching these "digital screen rips" i kinda started to realize that while I am not okay with SD content, some people have been around much longer than me and have become accustomed to SD programming.

regardless of what he says now, SciFi-HD (Along with FX-HD) is planning on launching either at the end of this year or early 2008 so....hopefully we will be able to enjoy the first screenings Battlestar season 4 in HD.

It's like that with most shows. It hasn't become practical yet to actually cut a TV show in HD. Most TV shows that are out there are cut in SD and aren't seen in HD by the creators until it actually is broadcast, not just BSG.

BSG looks pretty bad on Sci Fi. The DVDs of S1 and S1 looked MUCH better and not just becaue of the 16x9 enhancement.
Also, on the last episode, Scifi showed with that damned time compression frmae removal thing. Looks like it skips a frame every second. Most noticeable when movement is happening.
I know they do that for their syndicated shows to get an extra commerical in but on a first run show it's inexcusable.

I have also stopped watching the first runs on SciFi and now wait until it airs on UHD cause I cannot stand watching the bitrate starved, letterboxed noisy SD broadcast anymore on a 50" screen.

"When it comes out on UHD months later, I'm usually sort of surprised. "It's gorgeous! Look at that, you can see the reflection on the glass and everything."

Maybe I'm alone on this one, but I dont think it looks that good on UHD either, maybe cause its also substandard bitrate and still has a noisy/grainy/fuzzy image. Probably directors intent but it sure not sharp like DiscoveryHD-the way it should be! Lets hope the HD-DVD box set in August is a superb transfer.

God, I hope Sci-Fi transitions to a hd channel, however we will still end up getting the majority of their content upconverted methinks, at least for the first 2 years or so?

compression and bitcrap aside the grittyiness and fuzzy image is absolutely directors intent and in my opinion is essential to the motif of the show. It would be cool if they ever do find earth next season on a Sci-fi HD channel that they do bust out a ephiphany DiscoveryHD shot panorama... But in the mean time I'm happy with the way it is, I watch it on both Scifi and UHD. SciFi sucks because of substandard cable crap and UHD still has its limitations too, but most of the graininess and gritiness is essential to look and themes of the show.

I do fully agree. I'm just bitching about the quality of the SciFi channel pic.

Interesting . . . . .

Not really. It's his job, and he takes it the same way most of us do about our jobs. It's just something you do, and it doesn't have a magical sparkly air to it. You can read into it that he doesn't care about the picture quality, but to me it sounds like he is simply more concerned about story, shot composition, and editing than he is about the neat-o bells and whistles of high-def formats. And that's exactly where his (or any other director's/creator's) mind should be -- in what they do well at. Let the technogeeks in post make it look luscious, that's what they do well.

As to the massive corporate boondoggles that take place after the piece is completed... well that's a whole different (wheezing and collapsing) engine. I'm surprised SciFi is still around at all with the drek they have been producing in assembly-line fashion. (For what it's worth, on even my analog basic cable, SciFi is the only channel to have horrible blocking and digital breakup issues... something is definately wrong with distribution there.)

fully agreed. And using the dreaded "time machine" to further compress it and get an extra commercial in (which I can easily tell as the little frame skips drive me crazy) is inexcusable. Especially on a first run show.

agreed, i wish there was an equivalent one on the HD channel lineup, would even pay $5 to $10 per month for it.....

It agitates me that we are getting Season 1 on HD DVD in Fall yet they released Smallville season 5 earlier.
