View Full Version : How old is the average PlayStation 3 owner?

There have been studies showing that the average gamer is around 33 years-old. I know a guy who doesn't believe these statistics, and he thinks that all gamers are teenagers. I personally believe that 33 may be a bit high, but i still think the age of the average gamer is somewhere in the 20s, probably upper 20s, around 28 or so.

Why am i posting this specifically in regards to ps3 owners? Well, the statistics concerning the average age of a ps3 owner are a little more relevent to the duscussion at hand between me and my....friend.

Please, if you own a ps3, select what age bracket you'd fall under.

What do you think the average age of gamers is?

I'm 25 but looking at most 25 year olds I know, I might not be the average 25yo.

I'm 18, but i know more gamers that are older than me (online and off) then i do younger.

I wouldn't say a 25 yo gamer is any wierder than a gamer of any other age. The majority of people are not avid gamers, no matter what the age.

The other gamers i know are my brother-in-law, who's 25, his dad, who is 54 (!), and a few others around or just above my age, like my roomate.

My brother-in-law's dad owns all three systems (well, the Wii he bought for his younger son), and he actually camped out for a 360!

Absolutley not when it comes to home theater equip, HD and PS3 news :D Eh, skydiving too I guess hence "Slowfaller". I'm showing them the way though. This one friend of mine picked up a ps3 and a 46" sammy DLP. I help him all the time with questions and enjoy doing so. I'm no expert though that's why I love AVS.

I just turned 30 recently. I still like to game but my tastes have changed over the years. Used to love playing more FPS and some RPG/racing, now its taken a role reversal.

As for average age of a gamer, I think thats a tough one. It will probably vary depending which console you talk about... but for the PS3 specifically, I think the average gamer will probably be 20+. PS3 isn't exactly cheap so I don't think a lot of parents would easily purchase it for their kids.

25 turning 26, been gaming since my Dad hooked us up with an Apple IIC and sticky bears math when I was a tyke ;) Quickly switched to dedicated consoles starting with NES, Original Gameboy(still works), Sega Genesis, SNES, Sega CD, Sega 32x, PS1, PS2, N64, XBOX, PS3, possibly a 360 in my future. Every year older I get the more I enjoy the often to small amount of time I can dedicate to my gaming.

You should ask over in the official playstation forum if you want a more representative sample.

First time I've been in the 35+ category. I'm not to the 55+ category of wmwilker, but I am a long way from the low end of the 35+ category :D The first time I played a game on a computer, it was a Star Trek text game using a teletype terminal into a mainframe computer. Took a bit of imagination, but it was fun!

27. Was a big gamer when I was a little kid but I didn't own a console after the Genesis until I bought an Xbox in 2004. The fact that games started looking so realistic got me back into gaming. I'm not a hardcore gamer and my twitch skills leave much to be desired but I love gaming and try to do it as often as I can. :)

Well, i posted a poll here and on the GameSpot forums. I figured i'd average the two.

Wow lot of people polling in at "17 or under" compared to the "35+" in the Gamespot thread. Although then the question comes to mind, does the parent(s) who bought it also play the PS3? Or is it only for the child?

I think the average age on the site is a bit higher than most gaming only forums so the poll will not really be accurate overall.

One thing to consider is all the older gamers likely have kids that also play. All my friends are over 30. All play games, all have kids that play games The kids also seem to take advantage of the online aspect more than the parents. As we only play with each other online and the kids play anyone and everyone.

Well, it seems that in the GS poll, the 17 and under crowd are easily offset by the 26-35 crowd, and then the 35+ crowd just raises the average even higher. When you factor in the results from the this poll, what with a third of you being over 35, and another 40% in the 26-35 bracket, it leaves me to believe the average gamer is indeed in their low 30s.

Edited: Or at least ps3 gamers. ;)

Don't worry, you are not the only one. Out of all my friends I'm the only one with a PS3 as well. However I don't really play games on it currently. I just got it a little over a week ago... wasn't even planning on getting it but seeing as how cheap it was, I bought it. Was in Taiwan and it was selling for about $530 US including tax (60 Gig) so decided why not.

Currently I just leave it on to Fold.

45 here also. I started in game rooms in the early 70's with Pong, pinball machines and that shooting the shark game I can't remember the name. Then like many other older gamers I owned an Atari 2600, Missle command and my first RPG if it can be called that, Adventure on the 2600. ^^

I have no doubt believing the average age of gamers is 33.

I’m 42 and expect to be gaming as long as I have my sight. There is a stigma associated with it though because the phenomenon began as a kid’s hobby.

The reason why the gaming industry now surpasses Hollywood financially is because the entertainment value is fantastic. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but most just don’t realize the quality and scope of games today.

The fact is, race car drivers are using PC games (ok sims) to practice for the real deal. Mention this fact to a non-gamer and the response ranges from polite skepticism to those who’ll think you’re delusional. But that’s alright, they remain oblivious while we benefit from the results of multi-million dollar productions.

the PS3 due to its price and features as a top-tier multimedia gaming and home entertainment machine caters more to .. simply put

Those who can afford it .. stable young people (aka hotshots who got excess income) and older enthusiasts.. it's not so much for the teens and the college crowd most of it due to its price factor

Big boys and their toys

edit: I'm in my 20s and I have no kids/wifey yet so a lot of my $$$ goes to whatever I want in buildin up my pad :p

Oh yeah... I'm 40 AND had pong when it first came out; had it set up on the tv that was on top of the big console that was on the floor (the big console on the floor never worked... but sure looked good).

Vote'd. 26 years old here. My vote should count twice (twin brother, same interests). We're die-hard life-long gamers too, though we've sorta boycotted Sony all the way up to the PSP/PS3 (vestigal "Nintendo loyalty" from the Nintendo vs. Sega days).

Heh, though Blu-Ray was a large factor, we actually bought the PS3 for the extensive backlog of "A-List" PS2 titles. Understandably, we're kinda mad about getting no Guitar Hero support... XBOX 360 version to the rescue w/ USB controllers FTW (PC clones, HO!)! I'm just glad to finally get God of War, Shadow of the Collossus, Katamari Damacy (and I [Heart] Katamari), Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistance (own all the rest on PC/PSP), Jak & Daxter series, Ratchet & Clank series, etc.

Just about every multiplatform PS2 game I own for another platform (usually, PC), so I've missed surprisingly little. You'd be surprised how many obscure PS2 ports made it on the PC!

Totally a newcomer, never even played PC games but I got hooked on Motorstorm and I am having a ball, though I have a very steep learning curve for using the controller as it is just not something I have ever done. I did not grow up around games like most of the younger gamers.

Don't know how many gamers might get into Blu-Ray but having the PS3 does give options and I think it is a good value. :)
