My biggest complaint right now about my PS3 is that if I transfer my videos from my external har drive to the PS3 it doesn't retain my folder organization. Instead it imports all my videos (150 plus) is an INDIVIDUAL files  . I have them organized into folders on my extenal HDD....but those folders are 86'ed during the transfer.

To make matters worse teh PS3 won't allow you to create a new folder and then move videos into that folder.

I am in utter amazement at how in the world could they consider this a media machine and then be like..."O.K. when people save videos on the PS3 let's give then absolutely no options to organize their videos into folders. Instead lets only import the video file itself. They will love sifting through hundreds of individual video files to search for the one from last Christmas. Sounds exciting Ken, you got your green light on implementing that lack of functiona.......errrrrrrrrrr. I mean functionality."

Please, someone tell me I am an idiot and I am just overlooking this feature on the PS3.

You include a 60 GB HDD so that people can store lots of videos BUT don't think about a simple way to organize them into freakin folders?

Fix music first please. I can't have artist/album it has to be artist-album or you can't play them.

I have ~50gb of mp3s that I really don't feel like organizing, again!

The movies are less of a big deal for me, I would rather them let me access files over the network than add subfolder support.

Would also be nice if the preview icon worked on videos stored on the external harddrive.

You haven't overlooked - the current design doesn't expect you'll have more than a few media files... They will have to address this at some point, if they want to sell this as a media center - especially once people see the AppleTV.

I was hoping to see improvements in the 1.6 update - with support for media streaming and media organization options - but we got nothing.

Hmm that does seem like a rather big oversight. I haven't tried putting videos or music files onto my PS3 except for the 007: Casino Royale movie trailer I downloaded. Knowing this, I'm not to keen on storing media files onto the PS3 HD....

Wonder who we can contact or leave feedback to regarding this, that would not fall on deaf ears.

ya, I have the same complaint about importing pictures, I just keep everyting on a memstick as a result, which pisses me off.

I know it's not the solution your looking for, but you can capture a 15 second clip which is played while you're searching through your videos. It'd be easier to find the event your looking for if you can view clips from all the movies that you set to identify them.

I've got about two dozen trailers on my PS3 all with video captions and have no trouble finding what I'm looking for. Better yet, it looks pretty cool to have all those different miniaturized trailers playing at once :-)

The obvious solution is to not transfer the files to the PS3.

Instead, keep an external USB going back and forth from the PS3 to the PC/Mac. That way you save on your HDD space on the PS3 and you know where everything is.

Play the trailer/video and press the "triangle" button during playback. There is an option in there to create a preview clip.

I have to disagree. I have about 50 pictures I transferred from the camera's memory stick(Kodak) and when I go to photo's all the pics are in a folder. I didn't do anything special.

I currently do this. I just have have to plug the external HDD into the PS3 and I can view all my movies in their proper folders. Every now and again I update the external HDD with my latest movies from my computer.

But, it is easier for my wife to just turn on the PS3 and then have access to my movies. I have ripped a bunch of CD's to the PS3 and she just turns it on and they are there.

Believe it or not, hooking a usb cable between the external HDD and the PS3 is still a put off for her and a little intimidating.

I would just really like Sony to get their head out their a-- and add some common sense media functionality to this box.

Next gripe. Why in the world doesn't Sony make a sofwtare program that would be a free download onto your PC which would organize and stream your media to the PS3.

Why aren't we streaming yet? It is 2007.

Edit: the reason I don't keep my external HDD perpetually plugged in to my PS3 is that the geniuses at Sony didn't put a USB port on the back of the PS3, and I don't want the PS3's beautiful sleek lines ruined by a cable jutting out of the front of it.

Won't a mac recognize a fat32 external drive?

as far as the app to stream, instead of TiVo Desktop it can be "PLAYSTATION D3SKTOP"... I should patent that ;)

The SingStar UI looks like it could be a good starting point for a media front end for the PS3. I too wish Sony would address this. I want them to sell a media center app on the PS3 network and also sell more codecs.

Sell?!

It is supposed to be a digital media hub. Part of that whole 'more than just a gaming machine' thing.

Yeah, I don't mind paying for more codecs. In other words, I would pay for Xvid support rather than do without. I would also pay for SMB network share support.

Xvid playback works in Linux. You can also use the PS3 as a Myth TV PVR frontend with Linux.

I wouldn't expect folder navigation on the PS3s...I mean look at all the popular mp3 players out there...there are no folders on an ipod. Granted...ipods have playlists....something that the ps3 also lacks.

There is no access to hardware acceleration for video in linux (yet?), so you will have performance issues.

You can convert xvid to avc with no obvious loss in quality, but it will potentially raise the file size. ;)

I hope that future updates will aleviate these problems, but afaik there have been no announcements from Sony about improving it's current 'media center' functionality.

The file management hierarchies on the PS3 suck real bad.

They have a fantastic interface and an amazing machine, but their media management software needs to be improved dramatically.

Either they supply an "Import" function that creates the proper directory hierarchy for you or they clearly document and support a meaningful layout.

Damn, that should be very easy to do.

I thought we would have this function by now...with a update. There is simply no excuse to not be able to stream content to the PS3. It should be like any other device on a home network...You see it and transfer content to your destination on PS3 hard drive. Come on Sony...Let's see this soon with a update!!!

Here it is again...You hit triangle while the trailer or video is playing...and select... change icon.

Just out of curiosity. How many people, who dislike the organization, have ever used Vista? While the PS3 is a poor implementation the ideal, File Tagging is supposed to be the latest and greatest idea. Instead of that directory hierarchical structure we've all come to know and love, you'll know find files just by looking up keywords. I.E For Christams photos you tag em Christmas (etc., etc.)

I haven't copied enough data to the PS3 to see how I like it. And yes, the 15 second clip icon is super sweet.

Lorum

Does the PS3 use tagging? Tagging is neat for not losing stuff or keeping things in several different organizational buckets but folders are still needed.
I don't use my PS3 for alot of media and when I do its usually off of a flash drive but I can tell folders are needed. It's easy to see how a few gigs of music could get impossible to sort through.
This should be an easy fix, it already recognizes and uses default folders and will read folders off a flash drive so creating new folders shouldn't be too hard.

It doesn't seem to support any tags in mp4 video files at the moment. I've only checked the standard mp4 tags, not the Apple iTunes ones. But someone would have mentioned if they were supported by now.

Mistake 2K6. This BLOWS ME AWAY that Sony hasn't added folder functionality to the PS3! I have hundreds of videos/anime/TV episodes that cannot be organized in folders on the PS3's drive. 100% inexcusable! There's absolutely NO EXCUSE for not having this simplest-of-the-simple functions on this so called 'media box'!

ValkyrieStation

I haven't checked in a while, but the pictures could also use better folder organization. The only way I could remember orgnanizing all my pictures was by month or year...and they don't retain the same original creation date when you import them to the PS3. I would really like them to retain that information... I import a picture from October 2004 and it treats it as a March 2007 picture because that's when I import it. If it reads the picture from a memory stick, it can see the creation date (OCT 2004) but after I import it directly to the system, it forgets it even when I go to see picture information using Triangle button.

The folder situation is the same with music. I tried to export my itunes library on external usb to be used by the ps3. You get no more than two directories deep. Music-Artist If there are subfolders for different albums by the same artist (standard itunes heirarchy) the ps3 will not recognize the subfolders.

Xvid working well on my PS3 in Linux.

Not yet in HD though I guess. From what I've heard media players will need to be specifically optimized for the Cell to overcome performance issues and handle high def. Plus, a nice front-end wouldn't hurt either.

720p Xvids were working fairly well. Higher than that was impossible in my tests. All of my xvids are 480 rips from SD DVDs and those are working well.

Yes, that would be nice.
