Lately it seems like the PS3 has been getting louder when I leave it on.

Its in an open cabinet, no ventalation issues and still is getting pretty loud. For like the first 5 mins it silent, then picks up noise.

anyone else in good vented area have this same experience?

My PS3 is sitting vertically on the top shelf of my rack with wide open space all around. My PS3 is the same as yours, starts out very silent but eventually the fan kicks in and it gets louder but never gets even close to as loud as the 360. It doesn't bother me at all and I often have to use it with the volume at a low level.

Strange as it may seem, wear and tear does happen.

But it could also comes down to dust per cubic inch. I assume in a clean room, a PS3 can run very very quietly.

I used to have mine in a console under the TV. There is a door in the front and slots in the back. When on, I used to open the door and the fan never got what I would say is loud. Although I do think the fan varied some. There were a couple times when I wasn't home and the PS3 got turned on with the door closed, thankfully not long, and the fan was going pretty good when I got home. Since I started to "fold" with it and leave it on for longer periods, I decided I needed to either cut the back of the console to provide more ventilation or move the PS3. I moved it to the top of the console. I have not noticed the fan get any louder now that it is on top.

Do you have somewhere to put it out in the open just to see if that makes a difference?

Are you running Folding@Home? If so, that's probably why.

Mine isn't any louder than it was when I first got it, and it's nearly 80F in my living room at times now. I dust off the PS3 and the area around it every other week.

I've noticed there are two fans speeds. It runs at one speed normally, but if the room is getting warm (due to all of my equipment), and it's been on for a while, it kicks in the turbo. My observation leads me to believe there is a fan controller with a temp sensor attached. When the PS3 inside gets above a certain temperature, the fan kicks into overdrive to provide more cooling (which is a good thing). I've also noticed that when I turn on my ceiling fan or the A/C kicks in to cool the room down, the fan returns to its lower speed setting.

Overall, I think it's a good design. I'd rather have two speeds than a loud PS3 all of the time. I've also been able to directly correlate the faster fan speed with higher room temps and longer run times on the PS3. For example, when I'm running Folding@Home, I always leave my ceiling fan on to aid in room ventilation. Rarely is it running in the faster mode as a result.

I have a *VERY* dusty bedroom.. I don't know why either
it could just be house feng-shui that my room is the dust magnet of the house
or I have far too much equipment for that small a room since my pc is in there as well

I have the SharperImage Ionic Breeze and an air purifier and it's still dusty .. oh well, but anyhows the PS3 doesn't have any issues in there and it does get hot-n-humid, specially in nyc.. specially with multiple equipment and cinemaquest and etc etc

anyhows so far, running teh PS3 almost all the time and no problems at all ^^ I think my record was like 3 days straight of it being on

I am on my 13th fold...and my PS3 has been on for the past 4 days...the fan speed is not loud...and the PS3 is not hot at least on my. I am going to leave it on all the time unless there are some storms...

The fold i am not on is suppose to take 5 hours to complete.

My NS/day right now is at 450!
