my dvd player gives me the option to select the type of HDMI output, YCbCr or RGB. what are the differences between the two, and is there one i should choose over the other? i switched between them last night and didn't really noitce any difference.

it also states in the manual something along the lines of "if the image becomes distorted, choose RGB." thanks guys.

They are color standards. It shouldn't make any difference. If the colors look ok, use either one. For best results, use a calibration disc when comparing them: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9889995&&#post9889995

As long as the conversion of YCbCr to RGB is done correctly you shouldn't see a difference. With HDMI and YCbCr 4:2:2 you can send 10bit video whereas RGB is restricted to 8bit. If you are upscaling a DVD to 720p or higher you may see less "banding" or "contouring" if your DVD player can output 10bit video and your display can accept it.
