I had a similar problem with Babel. The subtitles just pop on the screen for a tenth of a second, and vanish. Occaionally something will stay long enougn to read.

I remember someone mentioning a patch in the Babel topic, as others were having the same problem, but I can't find the thread. Any word?

I also ran into a glitch when I paused the movie for a few minutes. It was on the Universal screen, but I could not unpause it. I had to turn it off and on to get it to play again.

Yeah. Some people had problems with Babel, and others didn't. Everything is updated on my 360 as of Sunday night, and I checked the subs in all my other movies (I returned Babel for the standard DVD), and they work fine.

I emailed Microsoft about this. Let's see how it went...

My original email:

" I'm having problems with subtitles in some HD movies on my HD-DVD drive. So far I've noticed this in Babel and Children of Men. The majority of the subtitles flash on the screen so fast that they cannot be read, and only the end of a string of dialogue will remain. Like, if someone is speaking a part that comes up as three subtitles, the first two flash by shortly before the third for about a tenth of a second, and the third will come up at the right time, and can be read. I posted something about this on avsforum.com, and there were a few other people having the same problem with Babel.

My 360 is up to date, but are there some other updates that don't come up automatically that I'm missing?"

And their helpful, and informative response:

"Thank you for writing Xbox Customer Support!

Hmm.... well I wasn't told not to submerge the thing in water, so I'm gonna go ahead and see if that fixes my problem.

And finally, problem solved. I had to start the movie while hooked up to Live to get the firmware update. My internet connection is way up on the third floor (my roommate has the router up there), my PC is on the second floor, and my 360 is down on the first floor. Everytime I've tried updating anything, I had to take the cable from my PC, run it down to the first floor (it barely reaches and I have to move things around), and I do it from there. I never thought I had to play the movie while hooked up to get anything. Kinda figured any updates should automatically run when I had it all hooked up.

Derp. I wish this was documented somewhere so I wouldn't have had to return Babel. Lesson learned and that.
