I wanted this as well but to no avail !
urbansouljah 03-28-07, 08:28 AM Too bad it's one of the worst movies ever made. Paul Anderson is a good director and the worst writer ever. He insists on writing the script for nearly everything he directs and he always changes the story to the point that it has nothing to do with what it is based on. Take out the references to Umbrella Corp and the licker and it could be any movie. The only thing I did like was that he changed the characters from the game. AVP was another movie that made no sense if you are a fan of either franchise or AVP comics.
cinemeccanica 03-28-07, 08:37 AM the review I was referring to was under the section HD DVD players when the 1st xa1 from jaan was reviewed, but I cannot find it anymore; had it been deleted?
If you mean the original Resident Evil, I love that movie. Worst movie ever made . . . uh, ok.
I would probably Import this one if I could find it, does anyone have it? I have the Superbit version of this movie which has great picture and an awesome DTS track.

I think there is no source for this on the Internet, since it does not even have a proper cover.
madpoet 03-28-07, 09:49 AM Correct. Only place to get it was in the bundle. I have looked for months :(
I have the disc. Been meaning to write up a full review but haven't had the time.
Initial reports out of Japan were that the transfer was artifacty, but I thought it looked and sounded pretty damn good. No bonus features at all on the disc, though.

Evil !
candyrocket786 03-28-07, 12:27 PM I've had no luck finding this release on the secondary jpn market.

What do you mean it does not have a proper cover? Like it just comes in a sleeve?

It comes in a DVD-sized keepcase with a generic black cover that says "HD DVD Premium Discs" and has the titles of the two movies included: Biohazard (aka Resident Evil) and Moonlight Jellyfish. There is no artwork, and aside from the titles most of the text is in Japanese.
You can read up on this topic here (http://areahd.dvdtiefpreise.com/?p=72).
There is some information about the Japanese release.

It lists DD only, but i'm sure its DD+.

I agree with you, this is one of my favorite movies. I'd buy an import version in a second if one was available.
Note to all: My copy of Resident Evil is not available for sale or trade. It wasn't easy to get the disc in the first place, and I'm not giving it up now. :)
Nor would I "rip" a copy, even if I had the computer hardware and software to do so (which I don't).
Thank you.
Josh have you written a review for this yet? I am curious how it compares to the Superbit title.

It's still on my to-do list, but I have to get through titles that I'm officially assigned first.
The HD DVD looks better than the Superbit DVD. Audio is about the same (loud!).
Note that the movie has the on-screen Japanese title "Biohazard".
madpoet 05-05-07, 12:46 PM Come on Josh... you KNOW you want to sell it to me :)
Dot50Cal 05-05-07, 02:42 PM Just a heads up for people looking, the movie is called Biohazard or バイオハザード in Kanji. I actually didnt even realize this was out. Can someone post some pictures of it?
1080please 05-05-07, 07:20 PM Why the heck wasn't this released as a standalone disc
Does Toshiba still release movies? or did I recall them selling their movie distro business.

The disc was a pack-in with the Japanese HD-XA1 player. It has not been made available for sale on its own.

One of my favorite films -- love it!
tormond 05-05-07, 10:07 PM I have had a friend scouring all of Japan for months for this disc for me to no avail...One of the few discs that I am actually ready to pay real money for.
The disc was a pack-in with the Japanese HD-XA2 player. It has not been made available for sale on its own.
It was actually packaged with the first batch of XA1s in Japan. Seems strange they would go through the effort of even making the disc only to give a limited number away with the Japanese XA1. I wonder how many copies are floating around out there.

D'oh! Typo!

Will probably be adding this one to the collection.
madpoet 05-06-07, 06:18 PM Good luck... I wish I could find someone willing to part with theirs.

That's a title I would almost certainly pick up on HD DVD, but as a stand-in, in my opinion, the upscaled SuperBit gives a truly fine image :)!
Kannisto 05-06-07, 10:15 PM One way to get the disc would be to buy a used HD-XA1 that comes with the disc from Japanese Yahoo Auctions. A bit troublesome and expensive but these kind of deals seem to be available :) May be difficult to do this from outside of Japan though.
Here's a current one:

I don't have the disc and I haven't seen one available in any 2nd hand store, there is not much of a 2nd hand market for HD DVDs in Japan to my knowledge so far anyway.
It has been published in Japan in December 2007 so you don't need XA1 to see the movie. Unlike Toshiba bundled version with no extras, this release has all the extras. Audio is DTS-HD 5.1. There is German version as well.
PS: Thanks for the review that you never published.
Romerojpg 04-12-08, 10:30 AM So the New japanses HD dvd is out there? crikey, someone get it then and compare it to that german disc :D

It has been available for quite some time at Xploited.

Romerojpg 04-14-08, 12:43 PM I am very suprised no one had bought it then and told us :D
Last time I mentioned it I was told its not out, guess it shows you what they knew.
Nice cover too :)
Kannisto 04-15-08, 02:27 AM This particular thread was a very old one that had no new comments in it since May last year until RavenX reopened it the other day almost one year later.
The import sticky at least has had some discussion about the Resident Evil (Japan release) and the German release as well when they became available late last year.
I posted an impressions thread in HDD forum about the Japanese release when I got it 21st of December last year (on release date). I mentioned it in the import sticky here as well.

Romerojpg 04-15-08, 01:37 PM Thanks Kannisto :)
I was told it was not out, they said that in mid January I believe, from a member on this forum, nice to know they were wrong!
neneloco 04-23-08, 12:02 PM wow, imports are still on the expensive side. wonder if they will ever come down in price.
It depends where you buy them. Japanese imports are very expensive. Resident Evil is cheapest at Amazon.co.jp at $40 plus $20 shipping. German and French imports can be bought for 10 Euros. Dutch imports go fo $27 at Xploited, some UK editions are $22.
bruceames 04-24-08, 10:05 AM With some exceptions, it's mainly been the German imports which have come down in price or been on sale. Most of the sales abroad involve US released titles. I've never seen a price drop or sale on a Japanese import yet, on the contrary I've seen prices creeping up a few bucks. I watched some of RE Japan last night and the PQ and AQ are both just awesome in my opinion (especially the AQ). Got it at Xploited for $42.95 + $3.07 first class shipping (2-3 days). The German version is marked down at Amazon.de at 13.97 euros but shipping is a flat 14 euros so unless you buy a few more titles it's cheaper with shipping to get it from xploited.
Romerojpg 04-24-08, 02:46 PM Resi Evil Japanese HD DVD is best price at Yesasia with Quidco applied :) free shipping too.
RabidRob 04-26-08, 12:36 PM **Important Notice: This German 'Resident Evil' disc is one of the first HD DVDs to be flagged with an Image Constraint Token. If your HD DVD player is connected by HDMI to your display, there should be no issue in viewing the movie at its full 1080p resolution. Unfortunately, viewers connected by Component Video will find the image downconverted to 480p Standard Definition. This is extremely disappointing, to say the least.**

German version is MPEG2 while Japanese is MPEG4/AVC. Japanese version has more extras.
SlickVik 04-27-08, 01:47 AM The BD is far superior to any of these releases.
Romerojpg 04-27-08, 10:36 AM The BD is far superior to any of these releases.
Is there a picture comparison? Anywhere?
DrCrawn 04-27-08, 07:52 PM The BD is far superior to any of these releases.
I've compared the Japanese version to the domestic BD, and the BD has more DNR. "Far superior" is just flat out hyperbole.
According to this reviewer, German HD-DVD is similar to domestic BD edition. They didn't make Japanese edition review.
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1323/residentevil_de.html
Video impression:
This 1080p/MPEG-2 transfer, presented in the movie's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio, is very similar in quality to the AVC MPEG-4 transfer on the domestic Blu-ray. The picture is sharp and detailed, with vivid colors (especially reds and blues), rich black levels, and excellent shadow detail. The improvement over standard DVD is immediately apparent during the security camera footage at the beginning of the film. The small text overlays are mostly illegible on DVD but perfectly crisp and clear here.
Audio impression:
Whereas the domestic Blu-ray provides the movie's English-language soundtrack in lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1, the German HD DVD uses a DTS-HD High Resolution encoding. DTS-HD HR is not a lossless format, but at least in this case the results are nearly indistinguishable, which is to say that they're both very nice.
Unlike some import HD DVDs from Europe (the problem seems to be confined to releases from Studio Canal), 'Resident Evil' has no issues with increased pitch.
Matt_Stevens 06-11-08, 03:09 PM Is anyone able to A/B the German RES EVIL 3 release with the U.S. release in regards to DVNR?
