View Full Version : National Geographic - Relentless Enemies Compatibility Issue On A2,XA2 and 360 Drive?
TWISTED BULLET 03-28-07, 11:33 AM I just recieved Relentless Enemies HD DVD on National Geographic, tested it out on my 360 HD Drive and it say's cannot read disc error. I thought to myself, thats weird, I also then tried playing the disc on my new XA2 and I get an 8 numerical code on the front of the player, and the disc fails to play. I al;so have an A2 and the same problem exists.
Funnily enough I do own an A1 HD DVD player also, tried the disc on that player and it worked perfectly fine.
Has anyone else had the same compatibility problem with the new next gen players? Do we need another firmware update from Toshiba and Microsoft or is this an isolated incident?
Any info is most welcome.
I only have an A1 and will have this today from two sources, Netflix and Amazon.com. I think I will watch the rental and then determine if I will keep it.
Did you watch the whole thing on your A1? If so:
How long is the movie?
How is the PQ and sound?
Is it a keeper in your opinion?
Thanks and I hope you solve the mystery of the disc not playing in the other two players.
khwiggins2 03-28-07, 01:05 PM The firmware is newer in the 2nd gen players. Why would they have troubles that they 1st gen do not?
I hope it is only a bad disc... This HD DVD is on order for me to, and should be here this week. I have the xbox add-on... :o
i watched this disc last night from Netflix. played fine on my A1. some of the shots are unbelievably sharp!
the program is about 90 minutes in length, narrated by jeremy irons. not a bad watch, overall. glad i rented it, because outside of demo material, i probably wouldn't revisit it anytime soon. i thought it was about different "relentless enemies", not just lions and water buffalo in africa. it was a good program, but a little bit long at 90 minutes.
if they release more titles, with varying subject matter, i might revisit it (i have a problem with collecting things).

It's 90 mins long, haven't had a chance to see the picture and sound yet, because I only got it working on my A1 which is setup to a poor viewing device.
Just to let you guys know, I have all the latest firmware updates for the 360 HD DVD Drive, and the new next gen Toshiba HD DVD players...
WARNER BROTHERS???
applejackaz 03-28-07, 02:34 PM If this works just like Discovery Australia, the only solution is to be a pirate. Add on + HTPC and DumpHD from Doom9 and then it will play. :(
I did try a new Australia disc and it made no difference! Come on toshiba, we need to be able to play these standard mode discs.
aaronwt 03-28-07, 07:28 PM I'm glad it's not just me having problems with Relentless Enemies. I had the same problem with my A2, XA2 and add on. While the A1 played it without any problems.

I haven't been able to get this to work with any tools at all. AnyDVD doesn't work (reports as NOT aacs protected for some reason), and the Doom9 tools can't get a key. (xbox 360 addon + powerdvd 7.1)
Hodnick 03-29-07, 08:38 PM I'm having the same problem with my 360 addon... what a PIA.... i just want to watch this!!!
aaronwt 03-29-07, 08:55 PM We'll probably need to wait for another update before we'll be able to play them.

waiting for updates make baby jesus cry :(
tbass2k 03-30-07, 09:25 PM I have an A2 and this won't play, i get the stupid code also. Has anyone gotten this to play on anything besides an A1?
DTV TiVo Dealer 03-30-07, 09:39 PM As I understand the problem, somehow three Discovery HD DVD titles were authorized in the basic mode and all G2 and the xBox adaptor will not read HD DVDs authorized in Basic mode.
Not sure why it is different, but the G1 stand alone machines have code in them that permits them to pay disc authorized in wither basic or enhanced.
A firmware upgrade, version 1.5 will be out by the end of May to fix this so the discs will work fine once we get the next firmware upgrade.

Is the May release for the A2 and the 360 addon? Or just the A2?
cinedream 03-31-07, 10:29 AM it's the same here, error code for this disc on the E1 and XE1 (same as A2 and XA2).
It's definitively not the disc, but the player that needs an update !
Let's all wait for a new software. update, 1.4 that is...
Greetings,
Nicolas

Whats the difference between the 2 modes? Apart from not being able to play, do we see any differences in PQ?
Why aren't these issues thought of before hand?
Greg Matty 04-01-07, 11:54 PM I am so sick of this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I get an error code 4086 4203 and this is on a 2nd generation $500 player!!! According to Robert we have to wait for May for a firmware upgrade assuming this is the same issue as the three Discovery DVD's he is talking about. If this is a basic/advanced authoring issue, how the hell did Toshiba come up with the butt-backwards idea or releasing a 2nd generation player that won't read an HD-DVD authored in basic mode? Un-fuc*in believable!
Why does Toshiba/HD-DVD insist on nailing their own coffin shut? The only thing worse than a lack of titles are titles which are released and can't be watched.
BTW, did anyone else notice that HD-Scape DVD sampler got pushed back yet again?
Greg
aaronwt 04-02-07, 12:40 AM And this has happend with the PS3 on BD. A title would play on every BD player except the PS3. You had to get a replacement disc for similar reasons. The HD DVD problem will be corrected with the next firmware update.
So are we getting an update for the 360 addon that will fix the issue?
rwestley 04-02-07, 11:19 AM I think this problem may not be Toshiba's fault. Why didn't Discovery or NG check the disks to see if they played before they were shipped?

Not sure about the Discovery titles (Thread title - National Geographic - Relentless Enemies Compatibility Issue On A2,XA2 and 360 Drive? ) but this plays fine on the A1.
As per a poster above, this title is awsome, i can't wait for more :)
Lord Flatus 04-02-07, 02:51 PM Get a grip people. You are on the "bleeding edge" and have chosen to be the guinea pigs that sort out these types of issues by purchasing brand new technology.
Relax.
Take a deep breath.
It will all be okay eventually.

We understand that but this is affecting 2nd generation players, not 1st generation and first run discs.
With so few good documentary titles out there, having waited for two months for this title only to be disappointed is a major let down.

Doesn't it seem really backwards that this wasn't included in firmware 1.0.0.0.0.0.0.?

P. Anthony 04-02-07, 06:41 PM I have an A2 and this won't play, i get the stupid code also. Has anyone gotten this to play on anything besides an A1?
It won't play on my A2 either (just updated my player to 1.3), and I also get that strange code (4086 4203). This makes me so mad that I can just spit.
I don't understand those saying "relax". If I go out to a store, and purchase an HD-DVD, is it too much to ask to have it actually PLAY like advertised???
I'm returning my unopened copy of Relentless Enemies tomorrow...it's ridiculous that I've paid for something that does not play as advertised.

Greg Wow some people are not cut out to be "early" adopter! :o Since both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are less than 1% of the total DVD market we are still very early in this brand new technology. There will be some bugs along the way just be glad that some (like this one) can be address with firmware updates. Last year Toshiba worked very hard to resolve numerous issue with the first gen players. As more studios begin to release new titles there may be new issues to deal with. Hopefully things will stabilize going into the holiday season.
I would love to see this title and many more from National Geographic but we will have to wait until May for Gen 2 players.
cjsm250 04-03-07, 12:57 AM About the update. Do you need a continiously on internet connection to get the update? I have a (slow) DSL connection, and I have to connect each time I boot up or log off.
aaronwt 04-03-07, 01:02 AM A DSL connection will work fine. I updated my A1 last year when I had 3mbs DSL with no problems. I don't notice any speed difference upgradiing with the 8.8mbs cable connection I'm using now. So it must be downloading the firmware update much slower than 3mbs.
cordillius 04-03-07, 07:51 AM 360 add-on and a no go. So... I should wait for the firmware update and not return or replace the disc? This is the consensus?

I guess if someone can tell me why the 1st generation A1 is able to read this disc but a 2nd generation A2 is not I'll quit complaining!
Greg
Didn't work on 2 of my 360 drives.
Where's that Spring update!?
Same here. No go with 360 addon and a PC. Probably it is a problem with new AACS keyes, that is not supported by PowerDVD Ultra (and brings problems for standalone players as well).
MikeLindsey 04-07-07, 12:48 AM rented this from Netflix, won't play on my xbox.
cjsm250 04-13-07, 01:51 AM I just received a copy I ordered during the Warner sale. On an A2, Code 4086 c5tE. The 't' has a bottom line also.
Its ridiculous this disc doesn't play. I'm not sure who to blame most, Toshiba, or whoever is responsible for mastering the disc in HD (National Geographic, Discovery, Warner). But someone dropped the ball. Its absurd this disc won't play on an A2. And now I have to wait six or seven weeks for a fix? I was really looking forward to watching this disc too. (I was also stupid enough to hope it would play at all.)
Cintel7 04-13-07, 02:52 AM get FW update 1.5
aaronwt 04-13-07, 08:43 AM Firmware v1.5 definitely fixes the problem. My A2 and XA2 will now play this disc after the firmware upgrade. Wasn't Relentless authored in basic and the G@ players wouldn't play those discs? The A1 player would. So they must have fixed this problem with basic audthored discs. I can also no play Discovery Atlas China and Brazil which wouldn't play on my G2 players before either.

The whole point now, IMHO, is HD DVD has turned into a crap shoot, in as much as you have NO IDEA if the darn disc you paid good money for will even play. I'd put M$ in the mix also it's their software. The uin titles are just as bad, thank God you can get most of the other titles on BD too. This is a very sad state of affairs me thinks. :(
Toshiba released 1.5 last Friday, you should be able to download it from their website, they just don't have a disc yet, they don't even have a part number for the disc yet.
Microsoft support doesn't know anything about this issue, however Toshiba has provided Microsoft with the firmware update, Microsoft needs to adjust it so it plays nice with the 360.
Xbox will release an update on May 7 that will address these playback issues, as well as help with the VGA cable color issues.
Yukon Trooper 05-08-07, 02:12 AM May 7th today and no update for the 360. Any news?
Hodnick 05-10-07, 10:48 PM Spring update installed and still won't play!
DrCrawn 05-10-07, 10:59 PM Apparently the handful of add on problematic titles are all fixed except "Relentless Enemies" [groans] . Fixed of course with the specific HD DVD update that is suppossed to turn up in the next few days, not the May 7th update that we already got. Why they can get "Relentless Enemies" to play I have no idea... So there it is, still no play for this title on the add on apparently.
Any new on this one? Still no go with Xbox addon, PC and the newest PDVD patch.
PDVD only shows a message like this:
"Player application Update
There are new PowerDVD components online.
Would you like to update now?"
Still there is no update available...
According to some from the insiders thread, the 360 addon will need a firmware update which they don't have a time table for.
I think it may be quite sometime before I can watch my copy.

bkillian said earlier it needed a firmware update, but Amir says he's not sure what kind of update it will require, firmware or not, and they're still looking into it.
257Tony 09-11-07, 07:25 PM Bumping this old thread. Any updates on this disc yet? I got if from Netflix last week (unaware of any issues) of course it wouldn't play, so I sent it back for another one, still no go. Any updates that I am somehow missing for my 360 add-on???
According to some from the insiders thread, the 360 addon will need a firmware update which they don't have a time table for.The add-on does not need any firmware update. It worked just fine on my HTPC with PowerDVD and the add-on. However, your 360 (not the add-on) might need a software update.
That said, you're not missing much. This documentary was awful. The camera work was good but it had cheesy writing, poor organization, continuous repetitive shots of the same stuff, and was about three times as long as it should have been for the material.

I'll respectfully disagree on this one. Personally, I liked it better than "Planet Earth." I have National Geographic HD. They tend to be more in depth than Discovery. I saw parts of "RE" on the channel before I rented the disc from Netflix. (I believe the thing was $30 at Fry's--a bit much for 2 hrs) If it weren't priced so high, I would add it to my collection.
High Def Digest liked it as well.
It played fine on my A20 a few months ago. I think I was at firmware 2.0 back then.
alexandertyler 12-16-07, 03:23 PM Well, does this title work with the 360 add-on and a fully updated 360 (Current as of December 16)? I don't want to buy this title if it won't work.
Thanks for any info!

FCBarca 09-23-08, 01:24 PM So anyone have an update on this?...I am thinking of purchasing the Relentless Enemies HD Disc but unclear if firmware has corrected the playback problem
I have both the A2 and XA2 players...Anyone?
Relentless Enemies plays fine on a XA2 with 2.7 firmware.
eapleitez 09-24-08, 10:57 AM Plays fine on the A2 as well.
FCBarca 09-24-08, 01:15 PM Appreciate the responses, gratzie
mosul210 10-15-08, 10:43 PM This is an amazing title, one of my favorites by far. This along with Eternal Enemies are my two favorite nature DVDs. It plays fine on my A3, have yet to try it on my Xbox Add-On. I will try it tonight and post an update.

Doesn't work on the add-on.
mistermoravec 10-30-08, 01:26 PM Nope, it still doesn't. I didn't realize there were any problem disks still out there. I bought this disk about 8 or so months ago for 15 bucks. I went to watch it today and kept getting a cannont read on my 360. I tried three different add-ons and none of them worked. I'm a little tiffed now. If anyone has the blu-ray copy and a compatible hd-dvd player and would be willing to trade me I'd greatly appreciate it.
I'm not holding my breath for another xbox update, but it would be great. I have about 50 unopened hd-dvds. Are there any other titles that simply won't work on the add-on?
Yukon Trooper 10-30-08, 06:46 PM There won't be an update for the HD DVD drive on the 360, unless HD DVD is revived, which ain't happening; however, you could connect the add-on to your computer, rip it to your hard drive using AnyDVD HD, then re-author it onto a dual-layer dvd, which you could then playback in the add-on like normal.
