Hey I was just wondering considering I have many unopen titles from movies I either havent seen and will open and watch soon, COM, Good Shepard, ect, to classics that I own cause theyre classics and just dont feel like watching them cause they are staples in my collection all unopend but love, ie Unforgiven, MI trilogy, Goodfellas, Full Metal Jacket, Casino, Departed is a new one, and Million Dollar baby. Does everyone break open their movies and watch them immediatly or let some of them sit like me until they feel a need to see these movies again in HD. BTW I have over 40 unopend regular DVD titles that are in the same category of the ones mentioned above.

I just got COM, and am saving it for the weekend. It seems more of a Saturday night flick. Sometimes I'll watch them right away, it depends on the movie.

114 titles between both formats, I have around 8 that are un-opened most of which are ones I purchased for family & kids which I'm not interest to rush right down and watch myself

I usually open them right away to look inside before I even watch them. I actually have World's Fastest Indian unopened at my house.

I may not watch the movie right away, but I open it right away. Usually I watch it within a couple weeks or else I wouldn't have ordered it.

I still haven't watched The Mummy or The Mummy Returns, though, but primarily because those were for my wife and life happened (that is, we have a son now).

12 of my 17 HD-DVDs are unopened. I'd seen them through the rental channels though.

OP,

What the heck is COM and why not spell that out and you spelled every other title out (except for Mission Imposible, which I assumed since it was followed by trilogy)?

I have 4 unopened HD-DVD's. Goodfellas, The Last Samurai, The Mummy, and the Mummy Returns. 3 of these I received at Christmas. The problem is I have netflix and new movies are always waiting in my mailbox. I need to take a couple days out of work to catch up.

I've yet to open 22 of my 45 HD DVDs. I'll get to them, just give me time (and some days off from the wife and kids).
I still have a couple of DVDs shrinkwrapped that I bought nine years ago! At this point it seems unlikely that I'll ever crack them open.

Please don't laugh. I have over 50 unopened HD DVD and Blu-ray discs. Okay, so I have an obsession that is, at present, being funded by the sale of my DVD collection. There are worse habits I could be throwing my money at...

I must admit to experiencing a little embarrassment when my friends come over and ask me why I continue to buy titles when there are so many sitting on the shelf unwrapped. The standard answer I give is that I generally buy them on sale and I like to have a good selection to choose from when in the mood. I hate having to go to the local Hollywood, Blockbuster or going online through Netflix to rent DVDs which I may never get around to watching. The money is gone and so is the title...

If I buy an HD DVD or BD disc it will be there at the exact moment I wish to view it. If it is a title I don't wish to keep I can simply sell it on eBay.

I always open my HD-DVDs as soon as I get them. I once had a SD DVD arrive cracked when the case looked perfectly fine, so I'm a little paranoid and want to check right away. I have at least 6 HD-DVDs that I haven't watched yet, plus King Kong which I've used to show off HD-DVD to others but haven't watched all the way through.

I only have 10 HD DVDs with 2 on the way, but I've watched them all at least once. But I have lots of DVDs that haven't been opened yet.

I definitely have a back log. They are all movie my wife doesn't feel like watching (or re-watching) again. We have Netflix so she will always pick a Netflix movie to watch over an owned one so she can get more in a month. I'm still waiting to see Layer Cake, Big Fish (we have seen the DVD), Kingdom of Heaven, and Children of Men. I'm also watching Jet Li's Fearless by watching 15 minutes at a time every time I go home for lunch. :) I also want to finish Saw III, and Descent. Both of which, my wife has no interest in.

All mine are opened but I've only watched around 40% of them. At one point I had 30 titles unopened. I opened all of them one night and now I'm i the habit of opening them right away.

10 unopened and 14 more that I haven't watched.
It's a combination of waiting for my RS1 to arrive, and the fact that most can't be watched while my 1 and a half year old is awake, nor too loudly once he is asleep. That and we tend to be so tired when he does go to bed that we usually just read for a half hour then go to sleep. getting old sucks. All this great equipment, and I might have to wait 5 years before I can enjoy it :( An expensive and untimely addiction/hobby.

Once the RS1 arrives, supposedly next week, the plan is to have at least one movie night a month. That's my plan anyway.

I've opened and watched all of mine. I'm afraid that I'll have a defective disc and not know about it.

The first copy of Seabiscuit that I got had no sound coming from my center channel speaker. I tried it 3 separate times after powering my player off and then on again. So, I returned it to Amazon. The second one sounds perfect.

I put my "media room" in the basement just so I won't disturb the kids when I watch tv/movies. Still, I don't get to use it as much as I would like because the kids don't go to sleep when you want them to (and I don't want to keep marching up the stairs for them during a movie) or your so tired from chasing the kids around all day.

I usually go to the store and pick out which movie my wife and I will want to see that night...or that weekend. So, I open up the case as soon as I get home to see if everything is okay with it. I do the same for titles ordered online. Now only if I could find more time to watch movies... :p

I have no unopened HD DVDs. Like others here, I open them right away in case there are issues.

That's not to say I've watched all of them. Out of 125 HD DVDs, there are ~10 that I have not yet watched.

I've got 5/7 BDs still sealed, and 4/6 HD DVDs still sealed. I like to wait until a "rainy day" type situation to break them out and watch em. Others, I just couldn't wait (Serenity, Batman Begins, Casino Royale). I do use Netflix a lot, so I've watched a lot of movies that way.

Currently have 5 unopened as I am saving them for a "rainy day" (little or no new releases).

Million Dollar Baby

Training Day
Lucky Number Slevin

Looking forward to April 15th will order 15 more.

Zero, if I start racking them up I decide that I'm buying too quick and slow down on the purchases. I did the same thing with DVD's since I started in '99 and I still have 400 of those.

I have all my 27 HD-DVDs opened and all 4 of my Blu-ray movies opened as well. I always like to check and make sure they are in good condition and not loose from the tray. I do have a few dvd movies unopened and one being Fearless which i hope to trade in and upgrade to the HD-DVD disc (got the sd-dvd as a gift from a manager at work for the dvds i lend her to watch)

between the two formats I've got about 80 movies (50HD/30BD)
I've only seen about 35-40 of them so far.
But I've bought heavily when there were sales and just don't always have the time to watch them. I'll catch up eventually in the meantime I saved money buying when I did.

Indeed. I guess I’m weird or over-think things too much or something, but buying movies you don’t intent to watch soon seems illogical on several levels to me. Unless a disc is a limited run or intended for someone else I never have a disc in my collection that I haven’t watched. The nature of media in general and video in particular makes buying films and stockpiling them somewhat foolish such as:

1. Media consistently drops in price over the life of a release. Dune was originally $19.99 on DVD, but can now be had for less than $10. Dune on HD DVD is currently $19.99, but it will probably be available at a lower price sometime in the future.
2. Special Editions or Director’s cuts are more likely as time goes on. Since we all know studios like to double/triple/quadruple-dip if you don’t plan on watching a movie right away it makes more sense to wait for one of the dips later on so you can get extra footage, extra features or a better transfer.
3. You could be drawing interest off of those movies you have collecting dust. If you can get a rate of return higher than inflation it always makes sense to hold onto your money until the last possible minute. Why drop $100 on movies you won’t watch for a year? You could just wait a year, buy the movies when you’re ready to watch them and have enough left over from the interest you made to buy another movie or snacks and beverages to enjoy while you watch your movies.

I’m not pointing the finger here; It’s your money, you’re free to spend it as you wish and I’m not saying I don’t waste my fair share of money. I just don’t see the logic in investing in a depreciating asset unless you intend to use it right away. Would you buy a new car and just leave it in your driveway for a year before driving it?

I'm not laughing at all. I'm in the same boat. I just started buying HD DVDs in January and have at least 50 now. About 35 are still unopened. I don't know where everyone finds the time to watch all these. I also have about 1500 DVDs of which many are unopened. I try to get most on sale. It is a very sick habit but I swore to myself and my husband that I would not buy any HD DVD that I did not plan on watching. We now make an effort to watch 1 or 2 every weekend. But since I just started, I buy them faster than I'm able to watch them. And I agree, it is one my bad habit that I throw money at too. I don't mind the money so much as where do I store all these DVDs? I have two huge racks and a couple others scattered through the house. My husband worries that I'm going to replace the entire DVD collection with HD DVDs. I've actually started to return some DVDs that I've bought that are now available in HD DVD. That is one advantage of leaving them unopened.

You make perfect sense and I can't disagree on any of your points. But I guess everyone has their addictions and this is mine. But I have now sworn off buying any SD DVDs, except for TV shows which will most likely never come to HD. I actually don't buy many that are full price unless I know I will watch it immediately. But I do stockpile them when there are great sales, such as 20% off at Deep Discount.

They dont give you flack when your return them. I was thinking I might do the same thing with some of my DVD Titles, but walking in there with a title from 2002 that is unopened might cause for them to laugh at me.

My biggest problem I guess with buying so many DVD's and now HDVD's is the release day buys. Yester year I used to buy all release day dvd's (ofcourse I had to like the film) mainly because the awsome prices @ cc &bb of 13.99 that never seems to drop that low again unless its sits for a long time as you mentioned. Nowadays I buy Hddvd not for the price but some as my base collection that ive seen a hundred times(and may also have on dvd) but still want to have the choice of watching with the old lady in HD if the itch finds me. Im starting to stock pile HDDVD unopened in the same manner as the old days... if I see a title onsale that normally is over 20 bux thats is less onsale, I might buy it maybe even a blind buy. I think the problem may also be me popping into the B&M stores a little too often on my drive home from work.

I've returned a handful to Costco that were unopend. They do give you some flack if they no longer have the item number in their system. If they are within the last year or two, it's not too bad. Costco is the best for returning unopened items (they can look up the receipt in their system). Best Buy and Circuit City won't take anything back at all. Sears and FYE will give store credit.

The drive home from work can be treacherous. I’m guilty of buying HD DVDs I didn’t intend to buy all the time. I work nights so many days I pop into the 24 hour Wally World on the way home to pick up any items the family might need. In fact I will be making that trip in about an hour here. I’m going in to get laundry detergent and paper towels, but I could end up walking out with COM or another HD DVD if I wander past the electronics section. Still I won't just stockpile the film; I will go home at least start to watch the film as I drift off to sleep. I don’t think I could get any sleep if I went home and stuffed the movie in a drawer or something, I’d keep myself awake thinking about how self-centered my actions were and how the money could’ve been used to take the kids to a museum or to buy the wife some flowers or even to buy the bum on the corner an egg McMuffin and a bottle of MD 20/20.

I have two unopened right now...The Departed and Hollywoodland. Have to wait for the kids to be in school or away before I watch. Like to have the surrounds turned up so even when they are in bed its hard to do. I refuse to watch if I can't get the "entire" experience..so I wait it out till the right moment.

We all watched Robin Hood last weekend and the kids loved it. I was impressed with the transfer..many scenes had the 3d look. Impressive for such an old classic.
