I was hoping to hook up my 200 GB USB drive full of DIVX movies to my DVDR-3400. I can not get the unit to recognize the USB drive. The drive is formatted as FAT32.
The unit plays movies flawlessly from my 1 GB thumb drive.
Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong?
Others have mentioned this should work.

Just a thought -- maybe it doesn't recognize it due to the size (FAT32). To determine this, you could attach something formatted in FAT. (forgot the size limitation -- haven't used it for so long)

My Philips DVDR 3455/37 will play files from a USB Flash Drive only. The manual states it will not function with USB HDDs. Yours may be different. Mine won't do it.
I'm curious..... who were the "others" who said it should work?

Step 2: Optional Connections (continued)
Connecting a USB flash drive
or USB memory card reader
You can view the contents of a USB fl ash
drive / USB memory card reader through
this recorder and record the contents
onto a recordable DVD. See the chapter
“Recording – Archiving from a USB flash
drive or USB memory card.”
A Connect the USB flash drive / USB
memory card reader directly to the USB
port on the front panel (as shown in the
above illustration).
B Press USB on the remote control to
view the fi les stored in the USB flash
drive or USB memory card reader.
C To stop playback, press STOP or
remove the USB flash drive / USB
memory card reader from the USB port.
Helpful Hints:
– The USB port only supports the playback
of JPEG/MP3/WMA files.
– The USB port does not support the
connection of other USB devices except to a
USB flash drive / USB memory card reader.
– When the USB device does not fit into the
USB port, a USB extension cable is required.
Lots of pertinent info in the Manual. Fouind it online in about 20 seconds. Forget using a USB HDD - ain't gonna work. Unless you know a hack........

That's interesting, both a USB flash drive and a USB HDD present themselves to the system as a mass storage class device. It's not obvious to me why one should work and the other not, unless they've deliberately coded a maximum size limit for the attached device in the firmware.
Just one thing to double-check - some portable hard drives draw their power directly from the USB port. Is the drive you're trying one of these? If so, you might try plugging it into an external power supply (ie, a power cable going into a wall outlet as well as the regular USB data cable) on the chance that the USB port isn't supplying enough power.

I have a Philips player with a front panel USB connection - it specifically states in the manual FAQ that scanning devices with capacities much larger than a typical flash drive will overwhelm the player - I assume that the internal memory or processor cannot handle the TOC associated with large capacity drives. But I would confirm as Sean suggested that the external drive you are using is plugged into its own P/S. From what I gather based on the Philips documentation, what you are trying to do doesn't sound like it will work. I agree with 'Shred. I'll try to experiment with it today, though.

That was how my manual made it sound. I never tested it though. If it works let us know.

hmmm...now I want to take my 8GB flash drive and try it on one of these just to see what happens.

I have a very similar problem to above. My 2GB thumb drive plays on the DVD-R without any problems but I recently bought a 320GB WD Passport portable hard drive and it won't work. Just wondering if I need to remove any of the pre-loaded software that came with it or need to format it in some way so it would work on the DVD player?

I use my 250GB Hard Drive with my 3400 without any problems. In order for it to work you have to format the drive as FAT 32 and if neccessary run it thru a pwr'd 1:1 usb hub.
