Kaleidescape Prevails in DVD Ripping Case
A judge ruled yesterday that Kaleidescape, which manufacturers DVD movie servers, can go on making its 5- and 6-figure products.

The DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA), the group that licenses DVD encryption/decryption technology, had sued Kaleidescape for breaching a contract that allegedly prohibits the development of products that enable users to copy protected DVDs onto a hard drive.

The judge ruled that, in fact, nothing in the group's licensing agreement stipulates that.

However, the copyright issues that could have emerged in the non-jury trial, in fact did not. So the ruling has no broader implications concerning the legality of ripping DVDs and making products that enable users to do so.

The DVD CCA is likely to appeal.
