Hey everyone. I have a serious question based on what I saw last night watching QVC. They had a 72 inch toshiba DLP flatscreen for 2999 free shipping. I want a projector and I see that I can get a bigger picture for 850 with the mitsu hd1000. I completely understand that this is a subjective question, but does the pic in darkness look about as good as the toshiba would? I just wonder because I have to move soon and don't want this giant if I can get the same damn thing for 1/3 cheaper. Any opinions?

The Toshiba was probably a 1080P machine, whereas the HD1000 is 720P. This alone is a bit of a hit in overall picture quality. But nothing beats the 'WOW' of a projector's huge picture. In darkness on a good screen, the pictures of the two are going to be relatively close in contrast, black levels, etc.
If you're going to move, a projector makes a lot of sense because obviously you can pick it up a lot easier. But for the best quality, you want to match the projector to a decent screen. Of course you can just project the picture on a bare wall (that's what I generally do) and the picture is certainly acceptable.

thanks for the reply. Yeah it was 1080. With a tv this size for that money, it is tempting to just grab it and not a pj, but still the pj is 1/3 the cost! Decisions...

You also then get back in to the debate of being able to tell the difference between 1080 and 720 projectors from a "normal" seating difference. If you are sitting close to both you will be able to definitely tell, but at a further distance back....? IMO... There are entire threads dedicated to this alone.
But it is truly the immersion that is what makes FP awesome and the reason why I don't think I'll ever go back to a standard size display...

I see the immersion point. The whole dilema is how the mitsu and a 72 inch dlp 1080 would look. I think the tv would be more functional just for sd alone, but you have this behemoth sitting in your room. The mitsu is 1/3 the cost but is harder to set up and isn't as effective with the lights on. I think the pj will win this battle, but my question is pic quality. Is the PJ CLOSE to the quality of a set this size even though it is 720? I'm not a videophile. I just need it to be close. Then I'd buy

Yo. I have about 64K in a cd right now. Every 7 months or so, it generates about 3k just for being in the cd. This means in May, I will have 3k to buy a pj, but I'm thinking about rolling it back in for another 7 monther and looking at the pj market then. By this time, cedia will be over with and the new line of pj's will be out. The mitsu 1000 is such a deal that I'm tempted to just grab it now because I have a 360 on a standard 27 inch and it is wack, but if I hold out and let my $$ work for me, I will ultimately get a better product like the epson 1080 around 2k at this time. Should I wait or buy? Honestly, do you guys think our nuts are going to get blown off by the products at cedia this year? I am aware of the hold off / buy now argument with this technology, but I can make the cash work for me and be able to buy something a lot better in a few months. What can I expect at cedia for deals is the big question.. thanks for the help
A PJ only works best if you have a total light control room vs a TV you can use it in normal indoor condition, day or night.
1080P vs 720P, my friend has a 1080P LCD TV, it is not clear even with HD program. There is no 1080P HD broadcast, and there won't be one even in 2010. So with a native 1080P display, it is forced to fill up the gap from the source and makes the pic a bit blurry. I would stick with 720P.
