View Full Version : Panasonic AE-900u "Flicker" question
I have a Panasonic AE-900u projector, and just recently I've noticed what appears to be a consistent (every few minutes or so) "flicker" on the image. It doesn't distort, but looks like it goes up a notch in brightness, then back down, then back up again. It appears to do this as the scenes in a movie change. At first I thought it was just the changing of the scenes in the movie (i.e. making the image "brightness" change), but it appears it's doing it at other points in a movie also.
I guess the best way to describe it would be that it looks like I'm chaging the image from Cinema 1 to Cinema 2 (for example), but I'm not doing anything. Could this be the bulb? I currently have 300 hours on the buld that came with the unit.
Thanks for any help!
rmccormack 03-30-07, 01:53 PM My Z3 is doing the same thing, but started around the 2500 hr mark, try turning your lamp to a higher mode, i only see it on my economy mode, i thought maybe it was just my bulb near its end, but its still bright at 2900 hrs, so i dont know.

What he said--leave it on high lamp mode for a day or two of viewing--then switch back and see what happens. Should work.
Good luck

Great! Thanks for the feedback, I'll give it a shot.
What would be considered a "high lamp mode" on the AE-900u?
Big Brad 03-30-07, 03:01 PM I have the same projecter bambam and have noticed the same thing recently. It can be distracting. I'm going to give the high-lamp mode a try. Atleast, according to the manual, it doesn't hurt my hours (3000 hours on low or high, respectively).
To change the lamp mode to high, press the menu button on the remote, go down to "option," select that and go over to lamp output. Change it from low to high. Also, you have to be displaying something on the pj to change the mode.

Big Brad 03-30-07, 03:02 PM bambam, I think it's also worthy to note that we are both around the same hours on our bulb. I'm currently at 294 hours.

Ummmmmmmmm I find the low or high lamp/same life expectancy a joke.
There is NO WAY a lamp pushed to full power, will last as long as a lamp pushed at 75%.
Ain't gonna happen.
Take a look at a light bulb, see those REALLY little strands?
Push those to capacity, they are slamming red, put a variac in line, and turn it down a bit... see the color now?
Yeah, it's still Bright orange/red, but nowhere near as bad.
Don't believe what they say, running ANYTHING a bit lower than it's max will lengthen it's life.
I can't believe thats actually in a manual, what idiocy.

I've changed to the high lamp mode, and so far it appears to be working. I'll keep it on for a view movies then switch back and see what happens.
Thanks again for the tip!
I extend my opinion, let one person(hopefully a professional bulb maker) tell ya that 100% power will last ya the same as 75% power.
I wanna see this.
Idiocy, and anyone that believes it is an idiot, plain and simple.
Wanna make it PC>? NO I wont, it is what it is, if ya can't handle the truth when someone is trying to help you, thats's YOUR problem.
I think I read on here somewhere the reason turning the bulb to high for awhile fixes it, is because it changes the arc of the filament. When set on low for the whole time causes a sort of a gap in the filament, and the arc has to jump.
This is the flickering you see.
At least that's the way I remember explained.
Big Brad 03-31-07, 03:01 AM I'm just reading what's in the manual, man, not saying it as fact. Mileage will vary based on everyone's situation anyways (how frequently the pj is powered up, etc.), so does it really matter? Probably not. I don't think either of us plan to leave it in high lamp mode, so just play down the hostility a little bro. No need for it here.
thaxx, that does make sense. Thanks for the info.

Sorry about that, I just can't believe that they would actually write that, it's almost like they want to sell you bulbs quicker.

Actually, this is what the manual says.
The usage hours explained
above are for when “LAMP
POWER” in the “OPTION”
menu has been set to “HIGH”
and when “DYNAMIC IRIS” in
the “PICTURE” menu has
been set to “ON”. When
“LAMP POWER” has been set
to “HIGH” and “DYNAMIC
IRIS” has been set to “OFF”,
the usage hours will be 2 000
hours. If “LAMP POWER” is
set to “LOW”, the brightness of
the lamp will be less and life of
the lamp can be extended.
