View Full Version : Oppo 970 "skipping frames"
BulkHedd 03-31-07, 10:27 AM I have only had my Oppo HD-970 for less than two months now. I've started noticing that when watching something it frequently seems to skip a frame or two so the video looks kind of jumpy.
I have it set to output 1080i via HDMI into a Pioneer receiver and then into my 1080p 52" Sharp Aquos via HDMI. I have the AV receiver set to just pass through the original video signal.
Any suggestions? I really think the player is fantastic but this is starting to bug me. Oh, I have upgraded to the latest firmware as well.
mzupeman 03-31-07, 11:25 AM I've also noticed this on certain DVD's. I've not been able to get a good response on this issue, and the Oppo replacement player that had been sent to me does the same thing.
AUSSiE78 03-31-07, 12:22 PM is this a known issue with this model? I am expecting to recieve mine in a couple days via courior. Am hoping that mine is free from any defects! :D

mzupeman 03-31-07, 08:50 PM It could just have to do with the encoding of certain discs, I don't know. I've had this issue where a frame skips every 10 seconds or so. It's not really that obvious either. My wife never noticed. But me, I can see. It's not like a terrible jerk or it's not like the audio skips with it. It's just on certain discs. I've watched quite a few other movies so far that have not had this issue.
sound dropouts 04-01-07, 08:31 AM Probably it has to do with frame rates that are not 30 frames or 24 frames a second: if it a pal dvd (25 frames a second) there could be skipping, for example.
I do not own an oppo 970, but I have seen it happen on other players.
BulkHedd 04-01-07, 10:15 AM I haven't watched any PAL DVDs at all. It seems to happen most often during the special features like the documentaries.
For feature films and previews, I've not observed any frame skipping with my 970 (had it for 3 months and watched 20 or so discs).
I agree that it might be the encoding. special features are typically shot as video.

mzupeman 04-01-07, 06:55 PM Well I've had this happen with Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, and Monsters Inc. so far.
louthewiz 04-01-07, 08:02 PM It's the encoding of the dvds and not the player.
mzupeman 04-02-07, 03:40 PM It's funny because Oppo also has Monsters Inc. and notices no problem with that particular disc, yet my other DVD players run it like a champ.
AUSSiE78 04-03-07, 12:32 AM just recieved my 970 and am going to look for any abnormalities in the movies (thanks to this thread!) So far no problems at all and I love this thing! Just running on a SD tv and the picture is still better than my $40 DVD player (DUH!)

hondo21 12-13-08, 11:31 PM Found this old thread via a search. My OPPO 970HD was purchased in March 2007. It's received moderate use since then. No issues until this week. The player is skipping frames at various places. The first time it happened the disc had a few smudges on it so I cleaned it and it seemed to help a little but then started skipping again. Then I watched another DVD with no skipping at all. But now I watched a brand new disc, perfectly clean surface, and it started freezing and skipping frames about 1:45 minutes into the movie (not far from the end). Taking it out and trying to wipe it clean (although it was already clean) only made it worse. This time it froze and I couldn't get it to even skip through that point. But the disc plays flawlessly on my iMac through this scene. It seems that the OPPO has become wonky. Anybody else have problems with their OPPO skipping?

I wonder if there might be a bit of fluff interfering with the laser? I would try blowing compressed air through the disc slot.
If that doesn't help, contact Oppo and ask for their advice.
