I have my X1 ceiling mounted ~15' from a wall mounted 96" 16:9 screen which the top of the viewable area is ~11" from the ceiling.
I'm considering replacing the X1 soon with one of the current faves.. i.e HD1000U or HD70.
I really need to determine which projector I could use that would work in the room if I were to place it in place of the X1.
throw distance, offset, etc...
Anyone upgrade with a similar setup?

I replaced my x1 with a Hitachi PJTX100 in the exact spot. Don't know about the others.

I replaced my X1 with the HD1000. The offset is basically the same(with X1 in 16:9 mode). The throw is very close also. All I had to do was move the mount over a few inches, due to the HD1000's lens being centered.
I replaced my X1 with an HD70. I was using a 4:3 screen and the vertical dimension was 49". I wanted to replicate the same height screen with a 16:9 version. I did so. The HD70 has less offset than the HD1000U (I wanted the HD1000U). As it turns out the HD1000U wouldn't have fit in my HT. Unless I wanted the screen to be any lower from the ceiling. And I did not.
The HD70 is 11.5 feet from the screen and 3.5" down from the ceiling (7' HT ceiling height)
The 16:9 screen is 13" down from the ceiling.
I am using zero keystoning. (But keystoning isn't bad in small amounts, unless you use desktop functions. Movies are pretty much unaffected.)
This is all from memory; if it's wrong I'll correct it.
BTW: we love the PQ on our HD70. Bright and clear. The blacks are slightly better than the X1. The detail in the black areas is much better.

I replaced my X1 with a HD70 as well. You will have to move the PJ to a different spot for sure. The lens is on the opposite side vs. the X1. I could have just moved it over a few inches, but I went ahead and moved it closer by a few inches so that the zoom was pretty much right in the middle.
What kind of ceiling do you have? It shouldn't be that big of deal to move the PJ. Heck, I even put new holes in the ceiling for the wiring. I got some metal mesh and plaster repair and covered all the old holes. Pretty easy.

Excellent info guys.. exactly what i'm looking for. Thanks!!
After looking at projection calculators at PP.com, the HD70 looks to be more suited for my set up due to my ceiling height (8') and the fact that my Carada is only 11" from the top.
Any suggestions on a cheap ceiling mount? I doubt the X1 mount would line up without serious mods.

Found THIS THREAD (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=380491) and cleaned my color wheel and it made a helluva difference. I think I may hold off now for a little while.. :D
That's a good way to go. I cleaned my X1 at about the same time as you. I went on to 2700 hours. The HD70 came out and I upgraded. It is better in every way. The noise factor is one that isn't mentioned much. Between the occasional colorwheel squeal (not too often but it did happen) and the too loud fans I was glad for the relative silence of the HD70. The improved resolution of the HD70 allowed us to sit as close as we wanted w/o SDE being a factor.
Good luck - who knows what great improvements will have occurred by the time you upgrade.
BTW- we kept our X1 as a backup and since we had converted a crawlspace into a Hometheater we will put the X1 and its screen back in place when we sell our house. Everyone loved the PQ on our X1 and I think it'll return more value that way than selling it on eBay. :)

100% agree. I've already pretty much decided when I upgrade, if my X1 is still mechanically sound, I plan to buy a new bulb and keep it around. It's been the best electronic investment I've ever made.
