I have a set of Yamaha 5.1 speakers that were given to me along with a Yamaha HTR-5240. I would like to replace the speakers (not necessarily the subwoofer, which is not part of the problem) with speakers with a better form factor for arranging around my small New York apartment. The speakers should either have an integrated stand, or have stands available -- I do not want to wall mount them. The speakers do not need to be particularly loud (my neighbors would complain) but should have good directional sound for watching action / horror / sci-fi, etc. -- not "room-filling" sound. I am completely at a loss for how to start trying to make a decision and would like some advice. I have about $500 to spend.
