Hi,
I'm using my Optoma HD70 with my sony DVD Player using HDMI connection. I'm using Fotodiox 92" inch 16:9 screen.
I set my DVD player that my display device is 16:9, but when I project, all movies have black bars on top and bottom. Am I doing anything wrong?
But my DVD menu is shown all over my screen
thanks
Ganesh

no you are not doing anything wrong. you are likely watching a DVD with a 2.35 format which is wider than 16:9 hence black bars at the top and bottom

16:9 (16 divided by 9 = 1.78 AR {Aspect Ratio}) Many movies are 1.78 or 1.85 AR and will have little or no letterbox bars. (Overscan in a PJ will usually take care of the slight black bars in 1.85 films.)
Some movies are 2.35 AR (Aspect Ratio) and will have black bars.
4:3 (4 divided by 3 = 1.33) Movies will have black bars on the sides.

It is the way it is. You can mask for each instance of black bars or just enjoy watching films until the black bars become as invisible as anything else (that isn't the movie) in your peripheral view. It works.

ahh.. awesome newbie question. :) hehe..

it's nice to have another home theatre pup join the forums.

gpjai, when you have about 24 hrs to burn, start searching and reading the forums here.. this is the best place on the internet to learn ALL about your projector and home theatre possibilities.

Go here and read all about using your the full 16x9 panel of resolution instead of wasting some on those black bars :)

You have one of the projectors that work well with CIH (if you really want to know more read and read and read...or just PM me and I will break it down for you).

Great! We're watching Season one of Battlestar Gallactica (The new/good series, not the 70's cheezey one ;) ) and the PQ is Fan-frackin' tastic! :D (and it's filling the screen - no bars. :)

Gotta love the HD70.
