Can I use a Lumagen Scaler as a Pattern generator?

I think test generator are too expensive. I know that lumagen has a lot of patterns available directly from the scaler. AM I missing anything by using a lumagen as a test generator instead of an Accupel?

What is the cheapeast lumagen scaler that provide the pattern I need to calibrate a display?

I have only seen this done once by a customer with a DVDO scaler and it was a big mistake. The test patterns in the DVDO VP50 were wrong. I have no idea if your Lumagen would be correct or not.

The test patterns in the DVDO VP50 were wrong.Which of the test patterns are you referring to and in what way were they incorrect? I've seen the half-transparent test patterns match up perfectly with sources from video signal generators such as the Accupel - i.e., with a digital source the numeric values were literally the same. (Although there can under certain conditions be a bug with the half-transparent patterns and some HD sources.)

For basic grayscale/gamut work using a digital output, we haven't noticed any issues. You can get into a bit of trouble using test discs or the internal generator if your input and output levels aren't synchronized (e.g., video/video, PC/PC), but that's usually a result of what the measurement package is expecting vs. what the processor is delivering. Oh, yeah, you can even control these directly from particular calibration packages. The same goes for DVDO. ;)

For analog outputs, we have not 'scoped them to validate how close they come. YMMV, there.
