View Full Version : BIG problem!
Ok, before I start, I have a Bose because it was given by my boss for free, and I haven't had the opportunity to buy a new Audio system YET.
I own:
Hd cable box, 55e2000, ps3, and the bose receiver. Problem is, the receiver doesn't accept HDMI, so that means I'd need to get a new receiver, with dual hdmi, but those are costly from what I've heard. My friend suggested that I try to connect both hdmi and component, to try to get video from hdmi, and audio from component, but I doubt that would work. So any ideas? If there's no possible way to get it to work, what are some good receivers with dual hdmi, and all the works? I was looking to spend no more than say 500-600.
Thanks!
If your TV has HDMI... run the HDMI to the TV for video.
Component only carries video.
Run digital audio from the external devices (optical/coax) as necessary.
ok, but my bose only has one digital out(optical) output or input. So that means I'd have to switch cables when watching tv, and movies right?

Your TV has two HDMI inputs so let your TV do the switching and take the digital audio optical output from the TV back to your Bose. Then when you select either of the HDMI inputs, your TV will feed the correct audio output back to the Bose.

icehawk_OS 04-02-07, 06:03 PM There are some "cheaper" AVRs with HDMI now, I believe Sony offers a few. You can usually get good coin on Ebay for Bose so perhaps it would be an option to sell that and replace it with a more fully functional AVR. Either that or a switcher, think monoprice.com has some you could look at.

Oh, never thought of that, great, the receiver is gonna have to wait then :D
To note... most TV's doe NOT "passthrough" DD5.1 from external sources. At best, you may get PCM stereo. The external "optical" switch is the optimal solution for audio.

so you're saying I won't get 5.1 right, hmmm. I might just trying selling the bose on ebay(I can prolly get 400-500 dollars for it)
Take the TV out of the audio equation. Turn its speakers off and listen to the Bose.
It will sound better (even Bose is better than TV speakers) and make life simpler.
Then use component video where necessary. There's no visual advantage to HDMI.
Or... consider this:

so this would be better than having my tv do the switching?
hmm, I'm not sure how that would work ratman
Oh I think I get it now. Plug ps3 to that(optical to switcher and hdmi to tv), the cable box to that(same thing as the ps3) and plug the switcher to the receiver?
Yup... and HDMI's directlly to the TV for video. Nice $8 experiment IMO.
