View Full Version : Recommended Equipment for DIY Calibration
erandmckay 04-03-07, 04:10 PM It seems we all know about AVIA, DVE, etc to help in the calibration process (doing it by eye). But I'm curious about what other equipment lies on the fringe between DIY and certified calibration. I've read about oscilloscopes, but am wondering what else their is? I read tryg's article about the projector shoot-out they had in Seattle and assume they had a light meter, but what else is there?
FWIW I did read various threads, but couldn't find anything and didn't see this in the FAQ. Thanks for your feedback!

It's long, but it discusses the S/W (free) and the various sensor probes that it supports.
There are also commercial packages (Calman, etc) that support much of the same H/W.

We feel the best value right now is with the DisplayLT, but this all depends upon your budget.

That, and whether or not you have a plasma, right? Or has that been resolved?
Shadowknight 04-12-07, 06:29 PM Oh, and don't forget you need a pair of eyes ;)

I assumed that was a given.

Is it also used for a projector??
CT_Wiebe 04-15-07, 10:44 PM Yes the Display LT/2 can be used to calibrate a projector. You do need to use CalMAN or HCFR and need to make a tripod mount (see the CalMAN forums: http://www.calman.tv/ - you have to register to use it - that's free).

Not yet, but we're working on it. Derek went out and bought a plasma and has a few of my filters, as well. I will also be lending one of my filters to one of our pro calibrator customers. As Claus observes, we keep most of this discussion updated in our forum.

Frank Biba 04-16-07, 03:27 PM Hi: I asked this question on another thread but got no answer. I have an older version of the Eye-One, the Eye-One Display. Is this useful for DIY calibrations for my two plasma (one being the Pioneer Elite FD1) and two LCD monitors? I have not selected the software yet. Or should I break down and get the Eye-One Display2 or the Display LT? I already have Eye-One Match 3 (updated from Match 2 which came with my older Eye-One Display), so I am assuming that I can get the Display LT with exactly the same hardware and software functionality as the Eye-One Display 2.
Thanks for any help..

The EyeOne Match is actually keyed to the serial number/model type of the hardware. Thus, a DisplayLT will most likely not work with the i1 Match (there are some caveats to this, which we can take offline). As for whether you can use the older i1 Display, you will most likely want to upgrade. We are still testing the suitability of the new meter for plasma TVs based upon some experiences reported from a few of our pro calibrator customers.

Thanks, Bill:
I am, as you already have surmised, a newbie. I have not done any calibrations yet, so I have a bunch of questions. I am assuming that the Eye-One Match 3 software is essentially useless for TV monitor calibrations; if this is the case I will probably get the Eye-One LT. Please PM concerning the caveats with Eye-One Match. I have a few proprietary questions for you also, that you might wish to keep private.
I also would like your feel on the opinions of your calibrators regarding plasma displays.
Thanks, Frank

The Vizio 42 did just not have the control over the picture I wanted so it went back.
Yep just picked up a Panasonic 42PH9UK for testing, someone has to do it :)

Since it is that time of the year, it crossed my mind that your plasma TV purchase is a tax depreciable capital expenditure. Of course, that is if it would only be used for testing and product development, and not for any type of personal viewing enjoyment. ;)
derekjsmith 04-17-07, 01:42 AM Yes I only plan to watch it when a test pattern is being displayed :)
CT_Wiebe 04-17-07, 04:40 AM Of course, you do have to watch a DVD or 2 "to verify your that your calibration has produced the results that you intended", flesh tones, black level details, etc..

But only one or two. Hey, we do this for our customers. It's not like we enjoy it. ;)

Bill, the thread you referred me to above is interesting. I purchased the I1-Lt today. Now I am assuming that the Eye-One Match software is essentially useless for LCD/PDP calibration other than computer monitors. If this is not the case please enlighten me as to the "caveats" for possible "adjusting" my already puchased Eye-One Match 3 software for use with the Eye-one LT (if possible). IF need be, please PM me offline for this discussion.Once again if I need to use different software, such as Calman, HFCR, etc., then the use of Eye-One Match 3 is meaningless.
I thought that I would start with the HFCD free software first and then go from there in selection of one of the other packages. Please advise.
By the way my Pioneer ELite FD-h1 generates a LOT of heat.
Thanks, Frank
