View Full Version : A Scanner Darkly released early?
denness544 04-04-07, 04:13 AM I saw A Scanner Darkly at Fry's today for BD for only $19.99. I thought this title isn't supposed to be released until next week. Well, I didn't pick it up but plan on going back tomorrow to pick it up. Saw this at the Fry's in Fountain Valley, CA.
I have a copy of the HD-DVD at my desk so next weeks Warner titles can be found if you look around.
I didn't look at the BDs at my Fry's, but I noticed Warner HD DVDs out early like Scanner Darkly and A Dog Day Afternoon. So maybe Fry's as general are putting them out early.
bigcheda 04-04-07, 10:42 PM just picked up scanner darkly...they had dog day on blu-ray as well.
fountain valley fry's btw
maingon 04-04-07, 11:32 PM the walmart near me had the HD-DVD out already

Just as long as it is not BD-25 MPEG2.

how many tier 0 movies on both sides use vc1 or avc or mpeg2?

Happy Feet
Corpse Bride
The Ant Bully
Those are a good chunk of the tier 0 movies and are all encoded in VC1.
Rob Tomlin 04-05-07, 12:15 AM Is this movie any good? I probably wouldn't buy it blind anyway, but is it worth renting via Netflix?

So... which one to buy... Blu-ray or HD-DVD ?
As it's Warner and there is no TrueHD announced, both soundtracks should be DD @ 640kbps...
So... which one to choose ? :)
denness544 04-05-07, 02:56 AM So those of you that bought it, how is it? I didn't pick it up because I had to choose between Crank and this one. It sounds like it got really great reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. How's the quality?

This is a tier 0 title, PQ-wise.
From the WHV site it says DD+ for the HD DVD and just DD for the Blu-Ray. Does anyone have any more info on the differences between the HD DVD and Blu-Ray of Scanner Darkly? I too am wondering which version to get.

Are you serious?
Great news if you are.

for the 1000th time...
640kb/s DD+ is the equal of 640kb/s DD. Despite the fancy "plus" ;)
A high ranked Dolby employee even hinted that standard DD might be a tad "more efficient"...

this movie doesn't have any fine detail or many shades of color. Probably an easy film to compress.
aaronwt 04-05-07, 12:06 PM I choose blu-ray because I like having resume and being able to do frame by frame.
Isn't the HD DVD resume feature better since I can pick any spot and still resume it at that spot even a year later? although With frame by frame and FF and Rev the PS3 smacks everything out there.

I was told the QC department called their VC-1 encode "really clean", which he said they never did, so I have been expecting this to look really amazing.
And because of the layered style of animation, and brightness and crispness of colors, the depth this title has sets it apart from every other release I've seen. Even the other animated titles.
chartwel 04-05-07, 01:27 PM awesome. i will be picking up this title next.

I think he was talking about the DD-core of DD+.

Exactly, this is a rotoscoped movie. It would definitely not be my first choice for buying a BD version. They spent all their animation efforts and $$$ in making the animation match the movements and facial expressions of the real actors; there is really no detail to speak of. I saw this in the theater; haven't seen the BD version, so I'm just guessing.
For those who haven't seen this movie, I would recommend renting before buying. I enjoyed it, but it's not for everyone.

It's also a rather boring film......even more so if you've read the book...if you haven't read the book. don't bother trying to understand it...perhaps that helps with saving space on the dvd
KyaDawn 04-05-07, 11:04 PM I bought the Blu-ray version, didn't see the HD-DVD version in the store. The PQ was fantastic. The movie, I haven't seen the whole thing since I fell asleep!
ToEhrIsHuman 04-06-07, 01:33 AM terrible banding on 'A Scanner Darkly'. you can clearly see the gradations of color throughout.
btw, yes this was a joke.

He is right...DD+ does not sound any better than DD at 640....
You can even email Roger Dressler from Dolby here on the forums....
