Panasonic 'Quite Confident' Blu-ray Will Succeed; 1080p Plasmas, Osi Umenyiora Shine
There was a virtual declaration of victory in the high-definition DVD war. There were two brand new lines of 1080p plasmas. And there was a New York Giants all-pro defensive end playing Madden NFL '07 as the Giants.
Yup, Panasonic's 2007 High Definition Display & More line show in New York last week pretty much had it all.
It would have carried a lot more weight coming from just about anybody else, but it was interesting to hear somebody claim the format war is almost over -- even if it was an executive from a company in the Blu-ray camp.

"It's safe to say that Blu-ray is on its way to being victorious in this format war," said Panasonic's vice president of technologies and alliances Jeff Cove, during the company's 2007 line show in New York. He said that Blu-ray is outselling HD DVD at a two-to-one rate.
Panasonic also issued a public thank you to film studios using Blu-ray for their high-definition video disc releases. It was kind of like they were accepting an Academy Award.
"With over 80 percent of the major studios committed to issuing Blu-ray releases and the majority of consumer electronic companies supporting this technology, we are quite confident that Blu-ray will succeed," says Gene Kelsey, vice president, Panasonic Entertainment Group.
The biggest actual news, however, was about plasmas. Panasonic executives, including Bill Schindler, plasma research and development vice president of electrical engineering, stressed that they feel plasma is the superior flat-panel platform for large rooms. Reflecting that philosophy, the company announced two 1080p plasma model categories for 2007 and four total plasma lines.
