View Full Version : PS3 on BG808 with BG-DVI review
Today i was blown away about the amazing picture quality my lovely CRT throws on my screen. Source is PS3 with 1080i hdmi to DVI high quality cable.
Setup was done as fast as i've never seen it before (about 15 min). Done it with the internal test pattern of some sony titles. The picture is sharp, sharp, sharp in every corner. And this with normal HD-8 RevB lenses!
Test discs:
- Terminator
- Underworld: Evolution ( fantastic blacks and supersharp picture quality)
- Tears of the sun (one of the sharpest)
- Hitch
Don't think the HD-145 can do more ????
Will sell my LCD which is backup until now ! Don't need it anymore.
Will post screenshots asap....
go CRT, go black, blows your mind away

Person99 04-05-07, 10:53 AM Out of curiosity, what was the review machine?
I've got an "s" series Barco and I didn't like the BG-DVI feeding port 3 as it is supposed to be used, I was much happier with it feeding port 5.
Dave
Dave,
how do you feed your Barco ?
Full analog way (vga on 5 x bnc ) ?
My friend has a 9500lc on 3,2m and the picture is just washed out. Maybe the screen size is a little way too big.
Will do some other testing with my htpc on port 3 cause the results on port 5 are just not sharp enough and washed out.

Any HDMI I want to use is through John's or the Ophit DDA (I trade them out to try them against different material as both are close though John's is a little better) to Kim's RTC2200 gamma transcoder's passthrough. Component sources use kim's component input. Both signals have some gamma mod applied, then the output of Kim's goes to an Extron 202 Rxi which serves two purposes: it adds a very very small amount of peaking to the signal and drives a local monitor so I don't have to turn on the PJ to schedule DVR recordings or dumpt recordings to D-VHS. Then it is 25' of Belden 1694a to port 5.
I compare every source using its component output to its DVI output through the DVI transcoders. Unless the DAC in the device is complete crap, I use its component output because I like it better. Right now, I'm scalerless, so I only using the DVI input to use the HD-A1 as an upscaling DVD player.
Will do some other testing with my htpc on port 3 cause the results on port 5 are just not sharp enough and washed out.

You didn't tell me what Barco you had. From this comment, I have to guess it is a non-s Barco. But the washed out thing is a little odd, that should just be calibration.
Dave
Have a Barco Graphics 808 without the "s".
You're feeding with 1080i too ? Or with 720p ?

I used to do both 1080i (HD) and 720p (SD DVDs). But since over 75% of my viewing is now HD (with the desire to get that to 100% :)), I have optimized my spot shape for 1080i, so 1080i is better but 720p is worse. So, I run everything at 1080i.

Yup - they'll give you a slightly sharper picture even still. But the best part is the better colours since the HD-145's are colour filtered on Red and Green while the HD-8's are clear.
My experience is that everyone that's used to HD-8's might not notice what they're lacking until they spend some time with a colour filtered machine. Then they can never go back.
Here's an example without colour filtering:

Here's the same machine with colour filtering:

Notice how much "greener" the green looks (for example). These pictures make the reds look about the same, but normally the unfiltered red will look too 'orange'.

The reds never bugged me. The greens bug me because grass, for instance, looks fluorescent.

Maybe i will do an upgrade to the HD-145 color corrected in the near future.
But the most amazing part on the BG-DVI is, that i don't have any stuttering while watching movies and that with 61Hz out of the PS3. Is that possible ?
I've checked this on any blu-ray disc i have.

Do you mean stutter or judder? If you mean judder, you just need to find a movie with medium slow motion to see it. I don't know all the BD discs out because I can't in good conscience support a company so devoted to anti-consumer tactics, so I can't really say go to this disc and look at this. But, just look for a medium slow pan with steady motion and you will see judder.
Dave
Watched Casino Royale yesterday it was just awesome!
No stutter at all the whole movie.
The only thing i noticed was on the "layer break" i think. The dvi module lost the signal for 1 second. Maybe that was random but have to check with another disc.
Screenshots will follow.....
R.Bauer 04-08-07, 05:59 AM On which titles do you find the testpatterns? If there are more testpatterns, could you sum them up?
Testpatterns are crucial for a proper CRT setup.
Go for a sony blu-ray title like Casion Royale and type 7669 and the enter button in the top menu. Think you have to have the remote to do this.
About 5 testpattern will be shown. You can do pause, step forward...
have fun
