Why are most of the recent Fox titles encoded in MPEG-2 as opposed to AVC? Is there a reason for jumping from one codec to another? Is encoding in MPEG-2 makes for easier and faster production?
I'm asking this because X3: The Last Stand was in AVC (a very good encode IMO; nice and grainy :) ), and this gave room for DTS lossless and deleted scenes in HD, which I really enjoyed.
Now with Night at the Museum, an MPEG-2 title, there's barely any extra material worth noting. I believe if it was in AVC, there would've been enough room to squeeze in some more supplemental stuff.
Are Fox thinking about double-dipping in the future when BD-J spec will be finalized, and BD-50 production will be in full swing? I myself am almost 98% positive that Fox is going to release the entire X-men trilogy with full BD-J interactivity, comic book pop-ups, everything but the kitchen sink.
What do you guys think :) ?
