i posted this on the hdtv programming section...but i believe this also relate to the blu-ray section. here it is:
quick question...tnt hd broadcast everything in hd (1080i), tv shows and movies. and it looks good to my eye.
now they are broadcasting cast away this friday nite. im eager to see it. now my question is...when they show the movie cast away in hd...and it said it is 1080i on my unit...is it really 1080i content? or they upconvert the movie from a dvd movie which is 480p to 1080i? samen abc hd channel when they broadcast hd movie etc etc.
if it is really 1080i...they said they are coming out with the blu-ray movie this summer in 1080p...i wonder how big of a difference between cable broadcast movie in hd vs blu-ray movie?

no, hd content on broadcast is not upconverted. I even hate this damn question when I see it, which has been repeatedly.

so the content is really hd 720p/1080i...if it looks so damn good..i think i will sell my ps3 and forget renting blu-ray movie since the quality is almost the same.
save me some money.

I compared my 16gig HD recording of King Kong from Cinemax HD, with my Universal HD-DVD, and on my 50" plasma, it was identical, even in fast motion scenes like the T-Rex battle. Of course, the sound is better on the HD-DVD. This isn't the case with all movies of course, but when you have a decent high bitrate broadcast, it can look pretty darned close. My 5th Element HD cable recording actually looks BETTER than my blu-ray copy, but the Blu-ray disc isn't considered top notch to begin with.

save me some money. While I do not agree with you.... TNT HD is usually subpar at best and the bitrates encourage macroblocking.....
If you really feel this way, you are a prime candidate to pick up a DVHS unit. You can pick them up pretty cheap right now and then you can tape all the TNT broadcasts you wish in HD for future viewing. I've got all the Star Wars movies on DVHS from HBO. Something neither Blu-Ray or HD-DVD are likely to see for quite some time.

Cable doesn't even come close to the PQ of the PS3, forget about the AQ. I also notice that some providers are better than others, like TW for example sucks balls. I see a lot of artifacts and macroblocking on TW.

what about abc hd? i saw "the rookie" in 720p...it looks and sounds pretty good to a blu-ray movie.

I think it varies too much to be a blanket statement.
A lot of cable companies do compress the signals since they have a bandwith issue in a lot of places. Some are better then others. My Comcast isn't even consistent. Although for the most part HD programming is always better then unconverted DVDs.
But ya TNTHD in my area is kinda like watching Zoom on widescreen for the most part.
