Hi,

What are the typcal setting names to look for in the service menu for grayscale adjustment?

I own a toshiba 72mx196.

RGB cuts and gains.

krasmuzik
04-06-07, 02:17 PM
AKA RGB drives/biases
AKA RGB brightness/contrast
etc
etc
etc

and my personal favorite - items #32-37

Thanks for you replies guys.

From what I have read in another thread:

the gain/drive controls are for high (near white) grayscale settings and the cutoff/bias controls are for Low (near black) grayscale settings for each primary color.

What I would like to know is their actual names in the Toshiba 72mx196 service menu. I can't seem to find the service manual for this TV on the net like I did for my previous Sony set.

These sound like grayscale controls to me, although I've never been inside the service menu of a Toshiba TV. This is just based on how the acronyms look to me, so hopefully this helps but I assume you'll want to hear from somebody else who has actually calibrated grayscale on a Toshiba...

CNTCB
CNTCG
CNTCR
Sound like contrast controls for blue, green and red, which means they're the "drive" controls

BRCBL
BRCGL
BRCRL
Sound like brightness controls for blue, green and red, which means they're the "cut" controls

These also look like contrast and brightness controls for blue red and green, although I'm not sure why the brightness controls each apparently have "low" and "high" specifications:
CNTB1
CNTR1
CNTG1
BRBL1
BRBH1
BRRL1
BRRH1
BRGL1
BRGH1

So gain/drive controls = contrast and
cutoff/bias controls = brightness?

or is it the other way around like krasmuzik seems to suggest?

In other words I wonder which are RCUT, GCUT, BCUT, RDRV, GDRV and BDRV equivalents?

Could it be BRBL1, BRBH1, BRRL1, BRRH1, BRGL1 and BRGH1?

just found more detailled descriptions and presets

It is there, but obviously it is buried. From the service manual:

1. Turn volume to minimum
2. Press mute twice on remote control
3. Press mute button again and hold button down
4. While continuing to hold MUTE on remote, press MENU button ON TV SET

You are now in service menu.

BRCBL = BRBL1

then what's the use of these 3?

the L and H near the end means they apply to the Low and High color temps.

So gain/drive controls = contrast and
cutoff/bias controls = brightness?

or is it the other way around like krasmuzik seems to suggest?

You are correct, gain/drive is the bright portion, cuts/bias/g2 is the black portion.

I don't believe Kras meant to suggest otherwise, he was just suggesting the controls as examples in terms of names.

For 2006 toshiba mx196 owners ... this could be interresting. I am very happy with the result!

Hi all,

After reading this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=852536) I realized that my calibration quite was a bit off. I had not taken into account the color brightness (Y) but only xy (tint and saturation) in my Color Management System (CMS). So I decided to redo it all over again...

I was able calibrate tint, saturation and brightness (xyY) to almost perfectly match the CIE chart. My only deception is that this set (out of box) has quite a strong yellow cast in skin tones as we can clarely see in the transformer pics (Megan Fox's face) a few posts back. The yellow cast was still a bit apparent even after calibration. So I had to slide the yellow tint a bit towards red color to correct that (while keeping yellow saturation and brightness at proper level) and boy am I happy with the results!!

Here are the results:

Service menu (Grayscale):

Offsets:

CNTCB/CNTB1: -24 (6CH to 54H)
CNTCR/CNTR1: -11 (64H to 59H)
CNTCG/CNTG1: -4 (68H to 64H)

BRCBL/BRBL1: +3 (00H to 03H)
BRCRL/BRRL1: +3 (00H to 03H)
BRCGL/BRGL1: +8 (00H to 08H)

Possible values are 00H, 01H, 02H, 03H, 04H, 05H, 06H, 07H, 08H, 09H, 0AH, 0BH, 0CH, 0DH, 0EH, 0DH, 10H, 11H etc... (up to FFH)
