View Full Version : Costco now has BD on-line!
cawgijoe 04-06-07, 03:03 PM Just checked Costco.com and there are Blu-Ray discs now showing for sale! Looks like about the same price as Amazon, but they of course will charge tax and shipping.
Regarless, this is kind of exciting and may be an indication of possible warehouse sales......who knows.....

Innerloop 04-06-07, 03:51 PM Just to fair and head off a future flame-war, they also offer HD-DVD.
Not that I care :) Very cool discovery.
MASrules 04-06-07, 05:33 PM I am a costco customer and have bought a few things online from them as well.
I am sure that my e-mail did little, but I did send one about a month ago expressing disappointment that they did not carry Blu-ray.
I would buy them if they were in the store, but probably not online unless they are cheaper than amazon.
Good to see another retailer adopting Blu-ray.

I don't think we need to walk on eggshells here, as this is a Blu-ray software forum after all.
eldithomaso 04-06-07, 08:49 PM No No, not in the store. The store DVDs they sell are already overpriced.
If they bring the Blue in to the stores it will be more than on line and defininately not Amazon competitive. Keep it cheep and keep it on line.
I have never bought a DVD from Costo B&M and never will. Their prices are too high and don't compete with even BB and Target special sales.
Who actually buys DVDs at Costco at their marked up prices?
wildfire99 04-06-07, 08:55 PM I used to all the time. Doing the math (since I have to pay tax from Amazon and usually shipping elsewhere) it used to be something like a $1 fee to get it from the Costco B&M, which was an acceptable convenience fee. It seems like lately they're cutting back hard on DVD sales. The DVD sections in the stores I've been in is only a quarter of what it was a year ago.
Still, it would be nice to have a retailer to go to for BD discs (or HD-DVD) when you just need something now, that isn't charging full MSRP. It seems to me like they're testing the waters right now to see if this is a potential profit item for them.
Who actually buys DVDs at Costco at their marked up prices? Some of their box set deals can be awesome. But as you say, single movie, new release DVDs are no bargain. The thing is, if they start carrying Blu-Ray there will likely be some coupon specials down the road that could make it a great deal. Also, if they carry Blu-Ray in the store people will start to see Blu-Ray as more mainstream and be more likely to purchase a player. I saw a PS3 bundle at Costco today for the first time. Unfortunately it only had Motorstorm with it. If they bundled both a game and a movie I think that would help show what the PS3 is capable of.
eXstasie 04-06-07, 11:45 PM I canada, Costco.ca has had both HD formats for a while. However, they never seem to have any inventory in store...
Go figure lol
jspielberg 04-08-07, 09:41 AM This is fantastic news.
If only to get more exposure to the format out there. One thing though... they seem to hide the HD-DVD discs (Costco is a closet sony fan?) ... so maybe with the larger selection of BDs, they will have a separate HD section near the TVs.
Also, their box set prices have been very good in the past. Maybe BD matrix box set will be something that we might see in our local warehouses.
Also... something just came to mind. I think Costco does a good job of getting the products that aren't selling at the manufacturers expectations and moving product. Maybe all those overprices FOX titles etc. that FOX can't figure out what to do with will end up as screaming deals at Costco.
Here's to hoping!
ps... Sad to confess I went from rabid BD fanboi to format neutral this week :(
I was in a Costco yesterday in NY and they had HD-DVDs in stock!
They were Warner Bros., and $18 each.
Does me no good since I've got BR, but maybe there is some retail hope.
cawgijoe 04-08-07, 01:12 PM I've noticed the opposite with the Costco's in Northern, VA.....the selection of DVD's has gone way up in the past couple of years......however, a brand new release is normally $18.09.....which is no bargain. However, CC and BB normally have their new relaeses priced at $19.99 AFTER the first week of sales.
I was in the Chantilly Costco on Friday and they had the cheapest HD-DVD player for sale as well as a palate of PS3's.......the HD-DVD player had been there about a week with not one sold.....a couple of PS3s were sold.
I asked about Blu-Ray discs and they told me that at the moment that was only an on-line item with no plans to sell in store. I did not ask about HD-DVD.
I'm in there three times a week......so we will see what happens.
cawgijoe 04-09-07, 01:15 PM Ok......jsut got back from Costco, Chantilly, VA......Monday, April 9, 2007.......still not a single HD-DVD player sold.....however, they now have the demo unit connected via Component cable to a Vizio 20" HDTV and playing a Toshiba HD-DVD demo disc.
They are now carrying a small number of HD-DVD discs located in amongst all the DVD's and priced at $18.99 each.....Batman Returns, V for Vendetta, and a couple others. Hard to see them unless you are looking for them.
No Blu-Ray discs.
You would think that in oreder to generate interest and sales, you would place the HD-DVD discs next to the player.......but what do I know.
I wish they would carry some Blu-Ray discs and place those alongside the PS3.
I wish they would carry some Blu-Ray discs and place those alongside the PS3.A Blu-Ray disc should be part of the PS3 bundle that they currently have. If more people saw that the PS3 isn't just a game console they might realize the value that it is.

I think that's a great idea. I'm not sure if the Costco bundles come with a movie or not....they probably don't. A friend of mine bought the PS3 back in either November or December of last year and all it came with was the rebate coupon book.....he though it would have maybe Taledega Nights.
At the least there should be a Blu-Ray demo disc. I remember buying a Pioneer Laserdisc player years ago that came with coupons as well as a demo laserdisc....this was great and much appreciated.
... I'm not sure if the Costco bundles come with a movie or not....they probably don't.I saw 2 different bundles yesterday. One came with MotorStorm and the other came with Genji. The bundle also includes an extra controller, but no movie.
I saw this myself. Hopefully , BD will be in store also soon
donricouga 04-23-07, 12:06 PM I was in costco here in atlanta, specifically Duluth and they have no high def media. It looks like the PS3 is doing fairly well there though because they had an enormous rack for the 60GB PS3 and the few that were left(around 6 or 7) were all over the place probably from people buying up the systems and looking for the right bundle.
As an aside, Sony would be smart if they included in the bundle Casino Royale.
That way people would see a Blu-ray player that also plays PS2 and PS3 games that comes with Casino Royale, a ps3 game and an extra controller for $699.

Costco has been trying to create a 'false demand' for these for a few months now. They won't stockpile them, they will only put a few out at a time to make it seem like they are 'selling like crazy', like the Wii actually is.
HD Player/Discs at my Costco, not a single BR Player/Movie to be seen.

Yeah, but it doesn't really matter if they carry online or not...their prices are absolutely horrible...

That's not true at the Chantilly, VA store. They put out a whole pallet a few weeks ago and they are slowly dwindling down. I doubt seriously that Costco even thinks about creating demand on any product they sell.
They also put out a whole pallet of HD-DVD players and as of a few days ago I did not see one sold.

I'm not sure where you get your information, but do you really think costco has a special place in its heart to make Sony's PS3 look like its selling. They sell so many items they could care less of ps3 sits on their shelves.

That's just the Costco Inventory System. Put a few out on the floor, if they sell within a week, order another handful. Rinse, repeat. It's not just consumer electronics. If they got the product as part of a closeout or inventory clearance from someone, then you'll never see it again, no matter how well it may have sold.
After 3 weeks, my local costco has sold about 3 out of the 4 cartons of HD discs they put out. That's not impressive, but I had to search to find the carton at all. I do wish they'd carry BD also.
LunchboxGTI 04-24-07, 06:32 PM I just ordered Planet Earth from Costco online as it was sold out everywhere else as well as backordered. Paid a couple bucks more but didn't care if it came sooner.
cawgijoe 04-24-07, 07:04 PM Just got back from Costco in Chantilly......after two and a half weeks it looks like they may have sold one HD-DVD player. The same box of HD-DVD movies are there.....hard to tell, but maybe a few movies have sold.
Looking at the pallet of PS3's, just counting the blank space....possibly four have sold.
Even though they have a stand up display for the Toshiba HD-DVD player proclaiming what it can do and the Vizio 47" TV right in the entrance playing the demo disc......most people are stopping to look at the picture and commenting on how nice the TV is.....not the source. :p
They now have 78 Blu-Ray titles online. Last I looked it was only in the teens.

Price is at least comparable to Amazon (at least before any tax/shipping) which is something.

The tax and shipping thing stops me from buying from them.......Costco is terrific and if they included free shipping, I'd be happy to pay the tax.
I hope to see some BD titles in the Costco stores one of these days.....that would be terrific.
Update on the Costco in Chantilly as of yesterday:
The one small box of HD-DVD's is now about 3/4's empty. The HD-DVD players are still not selling. The PS'3s are slowly dwindling down.
